The 'Matariki' paintings that we completed at the end of Term 2 are magnificent and they have been displayed in the senior school hallway for all the school to enjoy. Come in and view them. You will proud of your children's art work.
Cross Country, Thursday 12 August.
Remember: sports uniform, plus house t-shirt, trackpants and either the school jacket or a warm jumper. It can be very cold waiting around and after the race. We will be having food at school but everyone will need to take their drink bottle.
Grandparents' Day. Friday 13 August.
This is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate with the more mature members of our School/Parish community and to celebrate Mary MacKillop (08/08) and the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (15/08).
Mass 12:00 noon, lunch 1:00pm, concert in the Parish Centre 2:00pm.
We have been rehearsing our Kolo and we have managed two circles! Everyone has put all their efforts into the reheasals so you will be in for a treat.
Just to clarify:
All students are to come to school on Friday wearing the school uniform. Those that have a National dress will change at morning tea and wear this outfit for the Mass at 12:00. During the lunchtime (about 1:30) Room 6 students will go to Room 6 and change into the costume that they will be wearing for the concert. Any Mums that would be able to help with buttons et al are very welcome.
All girls should come to school with their hair plaited. Rachel Buyck has kindly offered to pin up the plaits, so if the girls with hair that is long enough could have two high plaits, and bring some bobby pins, Rachel will pin the plaits up. Rachel will do this at morning tea.
Costumes: For the Grandparents' Day Mass, the school will wear traditional/National dress from whichever ancestor you choose. For the Room 6 item we will wear European/Croatian type dress.
Girls: Croatian National dress, or the National dress from your family (e.g. Dutch, Scottish et al)
or a 'character' skirt, a frilly or lacey blouse, and an apron (optional)
Head gear: (all girls) long hair in plaits, either a headscarf (colourful) or a headband with flowers attached.
Footwear: white or black tights or long socks, black character shoes or similar.
Boys: the Croatian soccer uniform (shirt and shorts) We do have some spare shirts so we could organise part of this at school.
or the National dress that your family have chosen, ( a kilt for Scotland)
or long pants, a long sleeved shirt (plaid or striped) and a waist coat (optional)
Footwear: socks, black shoes or trainers.
Headgear: optional
I hope this gives a guide to the costumes. I do not want families to be stressed by this as we are enjoying the rehearsals and this day is all about celebrating family/whanau and our ancestors' spirit. The costumes can be as simple or as elaborate as you wish. I do have some character dance costumes that I will be able to supply some of the girls. We will do that this week. The item costumes can be brought to school and stored in my 'inner sanctum' or brought to school on the day.
We continue our 'Inquiry Learning" this Term with "Family Ties-belonging to the Big world. Where we fit in the Universe". This unit will incorporate Grandparents' Day, Maori Language Week (week 2), and the Earth and our place in the Solar System.
We have begun our inquiry with: Who am I and where did my family/whanau come from? i.e. where in the world did my ancestors come from before New Zealand and why did they come here? Grandparents' Day is at the end of week 4, (13/08) so we are concentrating on Grandparents: history, culture and roles in our lives.
Thank you for all the 'Taonga/treasures' that have come to school. I have photographed everybody so these pictures should be on display, with the explanations, for Grandparent's Day.
Fitness and PE: The fitness kit is expected at school every day. I have suggested that all PE gear is brought to school on Monday and left in the cloakbay until Friday when it should go home for a wash. The kit consists of the school fitness shirt, shorts and trainers and should be in a named bag. Students are expected to wear their school uniform to school and leave in their school uniform at the end of the day. Please refer to the school newsletter on this subject.
