Principal’s Message

Dear St Michael’s School Community,

Easter is almost here, where we celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus Christ from the tomb. Please keep in your prayers those people who will be fully initiated into our Catholic family at the Easter Vigil Mass.

St John Fundraiser organised by the Year 6 Outreach leaders (Esmenia, Emily & Zoe)

Date: Friday 6 April (first Friday back after Easter break)

Event: green or  yellow mufti day

Please bring: gold coin donation to raise money for St John.

St John is the first to care and first to help when we are hurt. St John is a charity so it relies on donations from all New Zealanders. It operates 24 hours day and night, seven days a week and assists around 400,000 New  Zealanders every year. Each gold coin goes towards saving someone’s life! We encourage you all to bring a donation for St John.

We, the Outreach leaders, will come to your classroom to collect the gold coin donations and we will give you a sticker. Please wear green or yellow mufti on that day.

The St. John team with their ambulance will be visiting our school on Friday 6 April too.

Easter Blessing

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, so that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3: 16).

God bless you,

Ann McKeown

Sports News

Touch Rugby 2017/8

St Michael’s has had another successful and much enjoyed touch rugby season. We had 63 players signed up for 6 teams so we were a noticeable entity on the fields on Friday night.
Many thanks to the hard working coaches and team managers who made this a successful season for our kids. In particular we would like to thank: Jimmy Maher, Mike Luxford, Jon and Audrey Williams, Alex and Emma Houghton, Gavin and Stephanie Kerr, Brenton Harrison, Wendy Zitzenbacher, Terisa Cordtz and Helen Totua.
There were many other parents who helped on the night supporting the teams in many ways including running subs and stepping up as needed for which we are very grateful.
“Every Friday we met at College Rifles for touch rugby and my daddy is the coach. We improve a lot every week. We always train before the game. My highlights of the season were when Simon and Maddie scored fantastic tries and when Alfie stopped a try. Playing in the same team as my brother is weird though. I always enjoyed the lollies at the end of the game.” Sarah Williams
“I love playing touch rugby on Friday nights because it’s really good practice for when I play tackle rugby in the winter. It’s fun playing with my friends and cheering on St Michael’s teams ” Sebastian Zitzenbacher
Look out for registrations late term 3/early term 4 for next season!

SMCS a Finalist at the New Zealand Waterpolo Awards- Flippaball School of the Year

SMCS was recently a finalist in the New Zealand Flippaball School of Year category. SMCS was nominated by the Epsom League co-ordinator and this was based on several criteria including parent support, sportsmanship, the success of the teams and the rapid growth of Flippaball at SMCS since we started at the end of 2016. Of all of the schools from around New Zealand nominated, it came down in the end to just two finalists invited to the New Zealand Waterpolo Awards.

Unfortunately, we didn’t walk away with the trophy at the awards night- that went to Diocesan in the end.  However, we still achieved an impressive New Zealand Runner Up so well done to the SMCS players and a big thank you to all the parents who help support and coach the teams.

If your child is interested in registering to play for Term 2 please email [email protected]  Your child needs to be Year 3 or above, and able to play on Sunday afternoons. Games are scheduled at Dio, EGGS or St Cuths pools, and last 20 minutes.

Confidence in the water is certainly a plus, and if your child enjoys team sports like soccer or netball you’re halfway there already!

We will be presenting you with your certificates next Wednesday 4 April at assembly. What a fantastic result!

PTA News

Thank you to all the parents who supported the PTA’s first St Patrick’s Day Cocktail Party on Saturday 17 March.  We ended up selling over 100 tickets to the event which was fantastic for our first social event this year.   It was a wonderful evening with a beautiful atmosphere created by the jazzy tunes of Bruce French and his Saxophone and the gorgeous flowers donated and arranged by Julia Glennie.  The venue was spectacular with fairy lights twinkling and the green glow of the harbour bridge and sky tower in the background.   Thank you to Mike Cruz and his band “South Collective” who entertained us with hits from the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s and definitely ensured everyone’s shoes got a good workout on the dance floor.  Congratulations to Alex Houghton who won the “Paddy’s Pot of Gold” and a big thanks for donating half of it back to the PTA and Congratulations to Greg Yovich who won the prize for best dressed in his St Patrick’s Day finery.

The PTA looks forward to welcoming all parents to the next fundraising event in winter.

$ The allocation of PTA Funds $
The PTA is proud to advise the school community that there has been a number of great initiatives taking place around the school that we can tell you about as far as where the PTA funds have being allocated so far this year.   We have recently purchased 6 new pop up marquees for the school to use at sporting events and special events throughout the year.  We have allocated funds for the school to purchase additional mathematics resources for the children’s education and we have allocated a significant amount of money to the refurbishment of the senior block toilets.  The toilets will be receiving a much needed face lift over the school holidays.
The PTA would like to thank the entire school community for supporting the PTA throughout the years; without the contribution from families with PTA fundraising initiatives, these purchases and other purchases during the year would not be possible.
