Thank you to all the parents who assisted in this great event, but especially to Charlotte Bagnall for all the hard work in organising it.

The School Disco

It was a shame I could not attend due to sickness but I heard that it was a great success, thanks to the PTA for organising it. Ali the Candy Floss person said that she has been doing discos for years all around Auckland and she thought our students were the most polite, courteous, well-behaved children she had EVER come across. Well done children.

Lost Property

Please get your children to check the lost property cupboard for their uniform. At the end of this term we will be giving all un-named uniform to the PTA to sell as second hand uniforms.

As advised in the July newsletter, the Board of Trustees bid farewell Sarah Langley (and her family) as they headed off to Tokyo to take an exciting next step in her career. Since then the Board of Trustees has been following a formal selection process to fill Sarah’s vacancy.

Please join with me in congratulating Brigid Strevens who was selected by the Board of Trustees to fill the vacancy to the end of the current three-year term which ends in June 2019. The Board of Trustees are really excited to further strengthen our board and take advantage of Brigid’s skills and expertise for the remainder of the three-year term.

We have included her brief biography to introduce Brigid to the wider school community.

My name is Brigid Strevens and my husband Stephen Coyle and I have three girls; Helena (Room 5), Celia (Room 4) and Marguerite who is 2 ½. My family has a long history with the St Michael’s parish going back to my Granny and following that tradition, I was baptised at St Michael’s, attended St Michael’s school and I have carried on that tradition being married to Stephen and baptising our girls in the church also. Outside of family, I work as a Management Consultant at PwC and I hope that my commercial experience along with my passion for the school and parish will bring real value to the wonderful Board team we already have in place.

Sports News

SMCS Cross Country

On Thursday 30th August our St Michael’s Catholic School walked down to Thomas Bloodworth park to compete in our full school cross country races. The year 6 Boys and girls competed first, finishing with new entrant children who ran with their year 6 buddy.

It was a wonderful school celebration with lots of sportsmanship displayed. Lots of children were determined and showed lots of competitive spirit to complete the race. Each house had a chant and cheered loudly to encourage their house to win!

The course was muddy and wet which made it a bit tough at times. We are thankful for our wonderful community that helped organise this successful event and to Miss Bagnall who co-ordinated the day.

Thank you to the Wee family for donating the drinks for this event and to the PTA who helped sell these items.

All the very best to the children who will compete at Catholic Schools Cross Country next week and to the year 5 and 6 children who will also compete at the Remuera Zones.

Thank you to the dynamic PTA Team, and all the parent helpers and sponsors who helped create a fabulous fun filled Disco last Friday night! Everyone seemed to have a fantastic night and thanks to the generosity of all families all the stalls sold out, raising over $3,000 for the schools fundraising efforts.   The pre-pay tickets and tokens seem to work a treat with over $1,700 worth of sales taken prior to the disco!   Thank you for being receptive to this new process and for utilising the Eftpos facilities.

Knowledge-a-thon “WINNERS”

Congratulations to the following classes and individual’s for being the winners of the knowledge-a-thon prizes this year!  It was yet again another very successful fundraiser for the school, raising over $8,500.  Thank you everyone for your continued support.  The money raised this year will be put towards the reflective space that the children are currently researching and designing as part of their learning.

Our Winners were
1.) The Class with highest % of pledge forms returned – ROOM 5, Congratulations Room 5 you have won a Pizza lunch for your class

2.) The Class with the highest amount of money returned – ROOM 2, Congratulations Room 2 you have won an excursion to Mindlab

3.) The family who raised the highest amount of money – was Hunter Hill from Room 2, Congratulations Hunter a wonderful effort, you have won a Sphero

BOOK WEEK – 10-14th September

The PTA will be hosting the scholastic book shop again this year in the break out rooms at the top of the hall.  The shop will be opened Monday to Friday 8.30am to 9.30am and 2.30 to 3.30pm (except Friday).   Please visit the shop to purchase books to increase your collection or perhaps early Christmas gifts.  The School library receives credits to spend with scholastic depending on how much we sell at the shop.

We are also seeking volunteers to help run the shop – if you are able to help out one morning or afternoon please email Emma Houghton on [email protected]

Stuck On You Fundraiser

The PTA has a new fundraiser initiative through Visit the website for all your label / lunchbox and school bag needs.   When you purchase something and use our code STMICHAELSCATHOLICSCHOOL at the checkout, the school will earn 20% each year on orders over $50.00.     Flyers will be sent home with the children over the coming weeks and posters will be displayed around the school for your information.


The school will be having an “All School Mass” on Friday 28 September at  12 midday for all students and their families.   The PTA will then be hosting a school picnic afterwards at 1pm and will be offering pre-order / pre-pay whole pizza’s for families to purchase and we will be looking at Wise Cicada to see if you can pre-order lunch through them as well.   More information will be sent via the class rep email network.   Please save the date to come along and share lunch with the children to celebrate the end of another action packed fun term at St Michael’s Catholic School.

FIRST AID COURSE – Sunday 16 September

There are still a number of spots available for the St John’s First Aid Course being organised by the PTA for Sunday 16 September at 9.30am to 1pm in the school hall.  The cost of the course is $40 per person.  Please email Stephanie if you would like to attend.  [email protected]

Uniform Shop – Opened this Friday (7 September)

Visit the uniform shop from 2.30 to 3.15pm to come and get summer uniforms sorted for Term 4.

This year’s Kids Art Works products (previously known as “Abacus”) are now available to order: products are $15 each.  Order forms with payment details are being sent home with the children this week and should be returned to the teachers by Friday 14th September.   Payment should preferably be made online to the PTA account as follows:

Cash and cheques (made payable to “St Michael’s School PTA”) will also be accepted – please attach to the order form in a named envelope.  The childrens’ artwork is on display in their classrooms and will be added to the Kids Art Works calendars, greeting cards, diaries, notepads and mouse mats (your own photos can also be used – please follow the instructions on the order form).  Samples of these products, along with extra order forms, are at the School Office should you wish to view them.  They make wonderful and affordable gifts for family and friends (the children quite like having their own art on their calendars and diaries as well!) and we will have everything back early in Term 4.
