From the Principal

Dear St Michael’s School Community,

Thank you for all your support over this challenging term. We wish all families a safe and happy break and look forward to returning refreshed in Term 3!

New Staff

Room 9 – The Board of Trustees has ratified a job share position for Room 9, with Chris King and his wife Victoria King. Chris will be in the classroom full-time in Term 3, and from Term 4, his wife Victoria will come on board. Chris and Victoria are highly experienced teachers.

Chris has been working for the past year and a half in schools throughout New Zealand as a mentor of Mathematics for Professor Bobbie Hunter at Massey University, and Victoria has been the Leader of Learning at St Ignatius Catholic School.

Reading Recovery – Deahna Barrington has accepted the position of being our Reading Recovery Teacher.

We are delighted to have Deahna, Chris and Victoria join our SMCS Staff and Community.

Mufti Mania – Friday 5 July (last day of school)

Doputz Primary School in Bougainville (Papua New Guinea) needs our help to get their school back up and running with new water tanks, toilets, resources and classroom repairs. This is a joint initiative of the New Zealand Catholic Primary Principals’ Association and Caritas Aotearoa New Zealand.

Students are asked to bring a gold coin donation and to wear mufti.

New Zealand Police – 105 Non Emergency

NZ Police recently launched a new non emergency number, 105. We’ve done this to make it easier to get hold of us in the event of non-urgent situations or ‘Things which have Already Happened’, which don’t require Police assistance immediately.

You can call us on 105 for all non emergencies, or you can go online at 105.police.govt.nz to report things like:

– Lost property

– Theft for a public place or car

– Intentional property damage

– Or to get an update or add info to a previous report

In the event of an emergency, always call 111 – Things that are Happening Now.

SMCS Run-a-thon – Get Ready….Get Set….. Go!!

We are excited to announce our new fundraising event, the SMCS Run-a-thon, which will be kicking off on Friday 5th July.  In previous years, the students have exercised their brains with the Knowledge-a-thon; this year we have decided to get active and exercise our legs with the aim of running (or walking) as many kilometres as we can (up to a maximum of 42km) in 6 weeks!  The children will be running some of the distance at school and the Run-a-thon will then finish at the SMCS Cross Country on Friday 16th August.

We will be asking you and the children to collect sponsors for their run – the money raised will go towards the completion of the turf project on the main field.  There will be several prizes awarded at the end, including for the class that brings in the most sponsorship money and the class that collects their money the fastest.

Next week a pack will be sent home with the children, containing an information sheet, a sponsorship form and the all-important Runners’ Card, where they will keep track of the kilometres they have completed.

Please support the SMCS runners!  We hope that this will be a successful fundraising event and one that will promote health and fitness in our children.

Look out for more information and your child/ren’s Run-a-thon pack next week.

The St Michael’s Family Tree

Time is running out – only 8 more days to purchase a tile for the St Michael’s Family Tree!  Tiles can be purchased until the 5th July, order forms can be requested by emailing smcspta2018@gmail.com  Don’t miss out!

Entertainment Book

Another way to support the school in their fundraising efforts is by purchasing an Auckland Entertainment Book.   Hundreds of great value offers are ready for your enjoyment.  Go to www.entertainmentbook.co.nz and type in St Michaels or contact Natasha Fletcher at natasha.fletcher@alphajobs.co.nz if you are interested in purchasing a book this year.

Second Hand Uniform Shop

Next open in Term 3 on Friday 2nd August, 2:30pm to 3:15pm.  Please note: we will not be opening on Friday 5th July.

Please remember the Uniform Shop when your uniforms are getting too small and need to be replaced!  We accept all items for resale: jumpers/cardigans, school socks and shoes, shirts and shorts, PE uniforms, school jackets….. Donated items can be dropped into the School Office.

Sports Gear – FREE to a good home! Outside the PE Shed. Please help yourself!

Stuck on You

With the huge amount of Lost Property at the moment, we thought it would be a timely reminder that you can order personalised name labels from Stuck on You.  Go to www.stuckonyou.nz and place your order online.  Use the following code at checkout STMICHAELSCATHOLICSCHOOL so that the PTA receives around 20% commission!

The next PTA Meeting is Tuesday 30th July at 7pm in the staff room.  All parents are welcome.
