Tēnā koutou katoa St Michael’s Catholic School Community,

“Kia ngangahau, kia whakawhānuitia te Rongopai a te Karaiti
To live and proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ

The sudden change of alert levels took most of us by surprise. I want to congratulate our staff for the way they handled this change. With the digital citizenship unit not being completed we needed to make individual learning packs for all students. We have had positive feedback on these.  All classes had the opportunity to meet via zoom. Here are some photos of Room 3 home learning.

Year 6 Camp

The children were all buzzing with enthusiasm when they got back to school after camp. They all commented on how fantastic it was and told me their highlights. Here are some photos of their time away.

Changes up to the end of Week 4

Meet the Teacher evening has been postponed to a later date. We will communicate the new date once we are back in Alert level 1.

In order to ensure social distancing guidelines and to limit contact between adults, we have made the following decisions for this week and Week 4.

Whilst at Level 2, parents are to leave their children at the school gates and not to come on site.

The following events are cancelled

  • Sunday 28 Feb: Parish/School Mass 10am & Family Fun Day

This week, there will be no:

  • Pizza Friday, Messy Kitchen, buddy Mass (Thursday)

Week 4:

  • No Meditation, PMP, Assembly, Y5/6 Sports Exchange

IF we are still at Level 2 in Week 4: no pizza, no Messy Kitchen, no buddy Mass (Thursday).
Whilst at Level 2, there are no parent helpers onsite unfortunately. We look forward to seeing you again when we move down alert levels!

PTA News

PTA update

Little did we expect as we started the new school year that we would find ourselves back in lockdown so soon, but there we were! A huge thank you to all of the Teaching Staff who leapt into action so quickly to make learning packs available so promptly and who are continuing to support our Children. Thankfully it’s been short and sweet this time and we can get back to school life.

Important Dates Term 1

  • Scholastic book orders close – 19th Feb 2021
  • Meet the Teacher Evening – TBC
  • Swimming Sports – Friday 5 March (Sacred Heart College Aquatic Centre)
  • Teacher Only Day – Friday 19 March
  • Easter – Good Friday 2nd April, Easter Monday 5 April.
  • Grandparents Day – Thursday 15th April (9:15am Mass, followed by morning tea and concert)
  • End of Term 1 – Friday 16th April.
  • Sunday 28th February – School Mass and family fun day update

Unfortunately due to the recent Lockdown we have had to make the difficult decision to postpone the family fun day. We feel that even if we are down to level 1, some families may feel uneasy in attending an event with a large gathering of people.

We are still hoping to run the event in the future and will keep you updated when a decision has been made.

As we’re sure you are aware, events like this don’t just happen so we’d like to say a huge ‘thank you’ to Laura Thomson and her team for all of the hard work that they had already put into preparing for this event over the past few months.

Mrs McKeown has also decided that the whole school Mass should also be postponed.

Friday Pizza sales

Unfortunately we are unable to sell pizza at school on Fridays until we are back down to level 1. So please make sure your child takes lunch on Fridays.

Scholastic Book Club

We are still able to order books from scholastic so if you haven’t already , please order by Friday 19th Feb.

There are many benefits of Book Club, including:

  • Carefully curated with age appropriate titles.
  • Value for money–children can take home a book from as little as $3.
  • Quality publishing–access to the best in children’s publishing from bestselling authors and illustrators.
  • Rewards that go back to the school to buy more books and educational resources!

Ordering from the brochures is easy, it is all done online via LOOP (the Linked Online Ordering and Payment platform for parents). There are two ways you can order online:

  1. Visit mybookclub.scholastic.co.nz to set up your account and order through the website.
  2. Download the LOOP App (this is a different LOOP from the Skool LOOP App!) and follow the prompts.

It can be a bit daunting setting it all up for the first time, so here is an easy to follow guide how to do it:

Parents Guide to setting up LOOP (click to view)

Each year remember to log on to your account and update your Child/Children’s Year Level and Classroom to ensure that ordered books will be delivered to the correct place!

Orders close two weeks after the brochures come out – Issue 1 orders must be completed online by this Friday, February 19th. Books are delivered to the school the week after orders close, and will be handed out to your children in their classrooms once they have been sorted.

Please do not hand in any orders or money to the Office, all orders must be placed online via the website, or through the LOOP App.

Our School benefits hugely from your Book Club orders. Rewards points are earned through our spend, and these points are gifted back to the Teachers and Library at St Michaels School throughout the Year.

Any questions please feel free to contact our Book Club Team on [email protected].

Ree George, Emma Houghton, and Sarah Benson.

Second Hand Uniform Shop

The next dates for the  School uniform Shop will be 12th March and 9th April.  Payment may be made by cash or online payment. Sorry no EFTpos available at this point in time.

We are still also in need of some more helpers to assist in the shop this year – the shop opens two or three times a term on a Friday afternoon.  Please email [email protected] if you would like to join the team! To donate uniforms please put them in a bag and drop to Gen at the office.

Updates on Volunteer roles

School Disco

Thank you to Giovanna Penna for volunteering to organize the Disco later in the year. There will be plenty of roles associated with the disco that we will need help with nearer the time. Please contact the PTA on [email protected] to register your interest.

Caring Shed Coordinator

Our Caring Shed is a space that items can be donated to, and then passed on to the Monte Cecilia Charity. Thank you to Louise Mannion who has volunteered to become the Coordinator of this.

PTA meeting

The next PTA meeting has been planned for 7pm Monday 22 March, in the staffroom. We would love to see you there – new members are always welcome, and we are a friendly bunch!
