Tēnā koutou katoa St Michael’s Catholic School Community,

“Ko te Whaea te takere o te waka”
Mothers are like the hull of a canoe, they are the heart of the family.

Welcome to Term Two, I hope your children had a great break. We have another group of student teachers at our school. They are in their second year of study and will be with us for six weeks.

Ministry of Education Teacher Only Day Reminder – Thursday 13 May

This will be our second session for the Paper RE501. Both Sacred Heart College and Baradene are also having this day.

Parish/School Mass and Reflective Area Blessing and Lunch – Sunday 30 May

This will be our first gathering with the Parish this year and we would like all families to attend. Students are to wear their school uniform and meet in the Parish Centre at 9:40am and the Choir will go straight to the Church. Mass is at 10am; Blessing of the Reflective Area 11:15am; Parish / School Social Gathering 11:30am in the Hall.

Pokemon Cards

It is so interesting to see the trends in toys come and go! We have noticed lately that the use and trading of Pokemon cards has caused quite a lot of upset amongst our junior students, and this is beginning to interrupt their learning time. As we have a long-standing rule in the Junior School that toys are not to come to school, we would like to ask that all Pokemon cards stay at home. If teachers see cards at school, they will hold onto them for the day, and return them after school.

Senior students are managing these cards well, and can continue to bring them to school at this stage.

The Month of May is dedicated to Mary, a fitting time to recite the Rosary daily

Hail, Mary, full of grace,
the Lord is with you.
Blessed art you amongst women
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
pray for us sinners,
now and at the hour of our death.
Amen.

I wish all mothers a very happy Mother’s Day on Sunday.

Manaaki ki te Atua,
Ann McKeown
Principal

School Uniform Shop

The next open date for the School uniform Shop will be 14th May. Payment may be made by cash or online payment. Sorry no EFTpos available. We are still quite short of stock for girls’ uniforms, especially larger sizes. Also if you have any spare hangers they will be very welcome for use in the shop. To donate uniforms or hangers please put them in a bag and drop to Genevieve at the office.

Scholastic books

On Tuesday this week, your child should have  come home with a copy of the latest Scholastic Lucky Book Club brochure.

There are many benefits of Book Club, including:

  • Carefully curated with age appropriate titles.
  • Value for money–children can take home a book from as little as $3.
  • Quality publishing–access to the best in children’s publishing from bestselling authors and illustrators.
  • Rewards that go back to the school to buy more books and educational resources!

Ordering from the brochures is easy, it is all done online via LOOP (the Linked Online Ordering and Payment platform for parents). There are two ways you can order online:

  1. Visit mybookclub.scholastic.co.nz to set up your account and order through the website.
  2. Download the LOOP App (this is a different LOOP from the Skool LOOP App!) and follow the prompts.

If you are new to ordering here is an easy guide to help you

Please submit your orders by 14th May at the latest. Thanks!

The Student council will be visiting classrooms next week with flyers and ideas for costumes. Costumes are, as always, optional, just come as yourself if you prefer!!

Refreshments will be available to buy and as in previous years we will be operating a token system for payment on the night for the various activities on offer.

We would really appreciate volunteer help for various aspects of the event either for the early or later part of the evening. More details on specific areas requiring help to follow in the next couple of weeks.

We would also love to hear from you if you, either as a family or a business that you are involved with would like to sponsor any activity for the event. Please contact us either on ptasmcs@gmail.com or gio.penna@icloud.com

The Caring shed and food donations

Monte Cecilia really appreciates our donations BUT please, please, please can we ask that only good quality items are put into the Caring shed.

Louise and Marama have had to throw away quite a few broken and soiled items that would not have been taken by Monte Cecilia. Thank you to those who have been donating to the food basket in the foyer outside the office, these donations will go into the Parish foodbank for distribution.

PTA meeting

The next PTA meeting is at 7pm this coming Monday 10th May, in the Staffroom. We would love to see you there – new members are always welcome
