Tēnā koutou katoa St Michael’s Catholic School Community,

“Naku te rourou nau te rourou ka ora ai te iwi’
With your basket and my basket the people will thrive

Congratulations to some of our students who performed in the National Youth Theatre’s performance of Beauty and the Beast this week. The Year 4-6 students and teachers thoroughly enjoyed watching this and we are proud of our students!

Senior Playground for Years 4 to 6

There have been a number of our Year 3 students who have been injured on the Senior Playground lately. Therefore we have made the difficult decision that the Senior Playground will be for Years 4 to 6 only. We acknowledge that this will be disappointing for our Year 3 students, but the children’s health and wellbeing is our first priority when they are with us at school. The Junior Playground continues to be available to all students Years 0 to 3. We thank you in advance for your support in keeping our students safe and in one piece!

Alert Level 1 – Stay at Home if Sick

Winter is upon us and this is the time where people can get ill with colds and flu. Please if your child is sick keep them at home in order to protect other students from getting sick. This will also help with the spread of COVID-19.

Pizza Friday!

Please help your child and teachers by letting your child/ren know if they are purchasing pizza and how many slices. As usual the PTA appreciates correct change.

Uniforms & Lost Property

Please make sure that your child’s uniform is named with their own name, especially if it is a second hand item. There are a lot of items in the lost property baskets that have names of past students.

Request for help with Year 5/6 soccer reffing please

Teachers Paid Union Meetings

On Thursday 24 June (Week 8), teaching staff who are NZEI members will be attending paid union meetings as part of the Primary Teachers Collective Agreement with some attending in the morning and others in the afternoon. The purpose of these meetings is for teachers to discuss the priorities for the renegotiation of their collective agreement in 2022. Issues being discussed, such as school staffing levels, directly impact on the education of your children. These meetings are a critical component of the negotiation process and it is the legal right of all members to attend a meeting and have their say. While there will be some impact on the usual school programme that day, we have adjusted the programme to minimise disruption, and the school will remain open. However we are encouraging children to be collected by 12.30pm. All children who remain at school will be supervised in the Hall. If your child requires supervision, please email Genevieve at [email protected] Thank you in advance for your support.

Day of Prayer for Migrants and Refugees – Sunday 20 June

Sunday 20th June this year has been named by the Catholic Church in New Zealand as a Day of Prayer for Migrants and Refugees.  It is fitting therefore on that day to hold a concert to raise funds for the people of India where the Coronavirus has caused such devastation.  The concert will be presented at St Joseph’s Catholic Church, 118 Church St. Otahuhu at 2pm, by the Otahuhu Catholic parish and school communities.

Prayer at Matariki

“Wairua Tapu, whispering in a small voice or shouting in water’s fall and siren’s wail Creative Spirit that dances across the water, Soaring Spirit of the mountain, Wild Spirit of wilderness speaking from burning bush, from tussock and hebe, from desert road and city street – we give thanks for our hikoi of faith, for our dreams of righteousness and acts of justice.

We give thanks for this place and all places of sharing and celebration where we can feel at home and be refreshed, and for all they mean to us, our place to stand and take a stand, our turangawaewae.

We give thanks for weekday visitors and concert-goers, performers and spectators, entrepreneurs and bureaucrats, dancers and addicts, and for ourselves.

We give thanks that the table of hospitality is open to all, that we may come as manuhiri but go forth together, as tangata whenua” . (Bronwyn Angela White – Josephite Companions Aotearoa – June 2021)

Pizza Friday

Room 7 is on Pizza duty this week. Thank you Room 7 Parents!

We would like to thank everyone for your patience as we continue to review the pizza/ice block process.

We have had a few problems with ordering the correct amount of pizza. Please could you ensure that your child only says that they are going to have pizza if they have the money to buy it?

Confirming with your child(ren) in the morning how many slices they are going to order would also be very helpful – to ensure that # of slices ordered early in the day is as close as possible to those picked up at lunchtime!

Also, it’s really helpful for our volunteers if you are able to make sure that your children have the correct change, if possible. Thank you.

Pizza slices are $2 each. Please note ice blocks are back to $2 each as we now have the larger ice blocks back in stock.

School Uniform shop

The next date for the school uniform shop opening is 6th August at 2.30pm – 3.15pm

Sabrina has also asked whether anybody may be available to help in the shop on the days that it’s open please? Please contact her on the PTA email address as above if you would be available to help, Thank you.

Yes it’s back!!!! Get your laces tied up and your water bottles filled. We will be running (excuse the pun!) the Runathon again this year but possibly with a twist.

Girls Night Out at the Movies

We are probably going to run this event in Term 3 as there’s not a great choice of movies coming up in the next few weeks, so more details to follow nearer the time.

Yummy fruit sticker collecting

Keep collecting those stickers to earn fun sports equipment rewards for the school. Each sticker is with 1 point and each bag tag is worth 10 points.

Please place completed sheets into the PTA box (outside the PTA cupboard in the senior school) or give them directly to Mrs Barrington.

Last year SMCS collected close to 6000 points, which equated to over $700 of playground and sports gear.
