Tēnā koutou katoa St Michael’s Catholic School Community,
“Me Mahi Tahi Tātou Mo Te Oranga O Te Katoa”
We should work for the wellbeing of everyone
Well this has been a tough week for me as I have been at home fighting bronchitis, asthma and a chest infection. I know there are a number of people in our community who are unwell and I ask that you keep all of us in your prayers. It was fabulous to attend the Catholic Principals conference last week as it gave me the time to reconnect with other principals and to celebrate our role in Catholic Education.
Senior Playground – After School
The Senior Playground is only for students in Years 4-6 – this includes after school. Please ensure your children are supervised regardless of which playground they are on! Thank you for your support in keeping our students safe.
Alert Level 1 – Stay at Home if Sick
Winter is upon us and this is the time where people can get ill with colds and flu. Please if your child is sick keep them at home in order to protect other students from getting sick. This will also help with the spread of COVID-19.

A Prayer For The Earth
“Creator God, you are present in the whole universe and in the smallest of creatures. You embrace with tenderness all that exists. Pour out upon us the power of your love, that we may protect life and beauty. Fill us with peace, that we may live as brothers and sisters, harming no one. O God of the poor, help us to rescue the abandoned and forgotten of this earth, so precious in your eyes. Bring healing to our lives, that we may protect the world and not prey on it, that we may sow beauty, not pollution and destruction. Touch the hearts of those who look only for gain at the expense of the poor and the earth. Teach us to discover the worth of each thing, to be filled with awe and contemplation, to recognize that we are profoundly united with every creature as we journey towards your infinite light. We thank you for being with us each day. Encourage us, we pray, in our struggle for justice, love and peace” (Pope Francis).
Manaaki ki te Atua,
St Michael’s will have a Mufti Day on Friday 9 July!
Please bring a gold coin donation.
Since 2007, Catholic schools around New Zealand have held a special mufti day each year to support small school communities around the Pacific.
For Mufti Mania in 2021 we are supporting a school in West Papua called Kristus Raja School. The students at this small school have felt the impact of the pandemic and been in lockdown since March 2020!
The majority of students come from poorer families and have found remote learning a real challenge. The school was built back in 1970 and the buildings are wearing out.
Funds raised this year will help repair toilets and bathrooms and provide new desks, chairs and resources for students for when they come back to school.
Winter Contributions for the Monte Cecilia Housing Trust please
The Year 6 Outreach Leaders have been in contact with the Monte Cecilia Housing Trust whose motto is “building brighter futures”! For winter, one of the contributions needed most is socks for life.
Please donate NEW pairs of socks for children in need throughout Aotearoa New Zealand. Please put donations into the basket in Room 8 before the end of Term 2.
Additionally, the Monte Cecilia Housing Trust would appreciate donations of warm blankets. These need to be clean and either new or of excellent used condition please. These can be left on the brown shelves outside the office or dropped into Room 8 alongside the socks basket. Thank you.

Room 6 is on Pizza duty this week. Thank you Room 6 Parents!
We would like to thank everyone for your patience as we continue to review the pizza/ice block process, we seem to be making progress!
We have had a few problems with ordering the correct amount of pizza. Please could you ensure that your child only says that they are going to have pizza if they have the money to buy it?
Confirming with your child(ren) in the morning how many slices they are going to order would also be very helpful – to ensure that # of slices ordered early in the day is as close as possible to those picked up at lunchtime!
Also, it’s really helpful for our volunteers if you are able to make sure that your children have the correct change, if possible. Thank you.
Pizza slices are $2 each. Please note ice blocks are back to $2 each as we now have the larger ice blocks back in stock.
Thank you to Fleur Ford who has been coordinating pizzas for the past few years. We now need someone new to take on the Pizza coordinator role. This can be either as an individual or a team to share the role, though it’s not too time consuming, and don’t worry, it does not mean that you are on pizza duty every week!!
Please contact us on [email protected] if you would like more details about the role and may be interested in helping.
Caring shed/Sock drive
Monte Cecilia has been very grateful for the donations that they have received from the caring shed recently. Thank you for continuing to donate good quality used goods.
The Year 6 Outreach leaders have been working hard with their sock drive for Monte Cecilia. If you can donate any (brand new) socks then please send them to school to the donation basket in Room 8. The Outreach team will be taking them along to Monte Cecilia at the end of the month.
Also with the weather turning colder recently, if you have any spare blankets (either new or good quality used ones) these will also be gratefully accepted for them to donate to families in need. Thank you all.

Yummy fruit sticker collecting – (Terms 2 and 3)
Keep collecting those stickers to earn fun sports equipment rewards for the school. Each sticker is worth 1 point and each bag tag is worth 10 points. Please place completed sheets into the PTA box (outside the PTA cupboard in the senior school) or give them directly to Mrs Barrington. Last year SMCS collected close to 6000 points, which equated to over $700 of playground and sports gear.
Link to the collection sheet- Yummy Sticker Collection Sheet (Click to view and print)
The next PTA Meeting is on the 2nd August – 7pm – Staff Room. We are always happy to welcome new input and new ideas, so come along! We’d love to see you there.
