Goodwill towards others is a precious treasure

Term 2 is almost over. It has gone so fast. I wish all families a safe and happy break.

First Holy Communion

Congratulations to all the students who made their First Holy Communion on Sunday 4 July.

I heard that the Mass was beautiful and that everything went well.  Thank you to Deahna and Emma for organising this special event.

Welcome to New Families and Students

We would like to welcome the following new families who have joined us this Term: the Smith family and the Reyes family.

Community Consultation Afternoon – Sunday 8 August 3pm to 4:30pm

The Board, Staff and PTA would like to invite you to this meeting. The purpose of the meeting is to give you the opportunity to share your ideas and thoughts to help with decision making with regards to:

  1. The Health and PE Curriculum
  2. The Charter and Strategic Goals
  3. The 10 Year Property Plan (BOT)
  4. The PTA (a Q and A, and feedback regarding the PTA’s endeavours).

Student Supervision: There will be a movie and pizza for children of parents attending this consultation, which will be supervised by teachers. We will be gathering numbers next term.

Pizza Friday

Please help your child and teachers by letting your child/ren know if they are purchasing pizza and how many slices. As usual the PTA appreciates correct change.

Uniforms & Lost Property

Please make sure that your child’s uniform is named with their own name, especially if it is a second hand item. There are a lot of items in the lost property baskets that have names of past students.

  • Class Masses are easily accessible via the newsletter and school calendar
  • Prayers are prayed daily at start of day, before lunch and end of the day prayer
  • Involvement of children at every Mass through readings and offertory
  • Integrating RE into real life i.e. Caring Shed, support various charities, Reflective Area, Becoming Church programme, Class Masses each week

Keep promoting the St Mary MacKillop values

We gathered student voice and have shared a sample of this with you below!

At home, what do you and your whanau/family do that reflects Catholic ways?

When you took home your RE book, what did you do with it?

What opportunities do you have to share the learning from RE with your families at home?
  • On Christmas, before we open presents we go to Church
  • My grandpa goes to church 1000 times a year
  • My mum and dad got married at St Michaels
  • I have rosary beads at home
  • We pray a prayer to God before we go to sleep
  • Every sunday we go to church in the morning
  • I have a cross in the living room, in my sisters room
  • Red angel that we bring out at Christmas
  • We did a sheet and wrote a paragraph to our mum and dad and they wrote back when we took our book home
  • I wrote a paragraph at school and mum and I opened it together and we wrote another one together
  • My mum looked through it and we talked about my favourite activities
  • My grandpa looked through it with me and we said a prayer
  • They asked me what I played at school and what I prayed at school
  • My mum asked if I am reading at Mass
  • My mum asked if I read in Mass on Thursday and I said yes
  • My mum asks when my class is going to Mass
  • My mum asked if I went to Meditation
  • I told my mum that we prayed the rosary

Winter Prayer

“Lord: In the midst of Winter, when the days are cold and wind can pierce remind us of the warmth of your love. In the midst of Winter, when days are short, dawn comes late, and dusk arrives early remind us that in the darkness your light still shines.” (https://www.xavier.edu › online-resources › prayer-index)

St Michael’s will have a Mufti Day on Friday 9 July!

Please bring a gold coin donation.

Since 2007, Catholic schools around New Zealand have held a special mufti day each year to support small school communities around the Pacific.

For Mufti Mania in 2021 we are supporting a school in West Papua called Kristus Raja School. The students at this small school have felt the impact of the pandemic and been in lockdown since March 2020!

The majority of students come from poorer families and have found remote learning a real challenge. The school was built back in 1970 and the buildings are wearing out.

Funds raised this year will help repair toilets and bathrooms and provide new desks, chairs and resources for students for when they come back to school.

Thank You

Monte Cecilia Housing Trust Blanket and Sock Drive

Monte Cecilia were so pleased to see the Outreach Leaders on Tuesday and were thrilled with the socks and warm blankets SMCS school community had donated. Elaine informed Louise Barnett that our donations were being used straight away to help a family in crisis who had just moved into temporary accommodation that Tuesday with absolutely nothing.
Thank you to Louise Barnett and Monica Choi for transporting our Outreach Leaders and to everyone for donating to such a worthy cause. Below are photos of our Y6 Outreach Leaders delivering the items to Monte Cecilia Housing Trust.

Reflective Area Planting – Room 6

All the native plants in the Reflective area are now planted thank-you to Room 6. Over the last two Friday afternoons Room 6 have each selected one plant, planted it in the soil, labelled it with their name and then carefully mulched around it. The children really got engaged in this task – we even set up a chain gang to transfer mulch from the big mulch pile over to the plants! Come and check out their hard work. We look forward to seeing the plants grow and provide a beautiful backdrop to the Reflective area.

Pizza Friday

Room 4 is on Pizza duty this week. Thank you Room 4, Parents!

We would like to thank everyone for your patience as we continue to review the pizza/ice block process, we seem to be making progress!

We have had a few problems with ordering the correct amount of pizza. Please could you ensure that your child only says that they are going to have pizza if they have the money to buy it?

Confirming with your child(ren) in the morning how many slices they are going to order would also be very helpful – to ensure that # of slices ordered early in the day is as close as possible to those picked up at lunchtime!

Also, it’s really helpful for our volunteers if you are able to make sure that your children have the correct change, if possible. Thank you.

Pizza slices are $2 each. Please note ice blocks are back to $2 each as we now have the larger ice blocks back in stock.

Pizza Coordinator role

HELP NEEDED PLEASE! We now need someone new to take on the Pizza Coordinator role.

You could take this on either as an individual or make a team to share the role, though it’s not too time consuming, and don’t worry…..it does not mean that you are on pizza duty every week!!

Please contact us on [email protected] if you would like more details about the role and may be interested in helping.

Caring shed

Thank you continuing to donate so generously to The Caring Shed, all good quality donations are gratefully accepted.

Please send food donations into school to the basket by the office. These  donations will be taken up to Church every Thursday when we have class masses and will be taken up at the offertory.

School Uniform shop

The next dates for the school uniform shop opening are 6th August and 3rd September. If you find that you need anything before then please contact Sabrina via the PTA email [email protected].

We are quite well stocked with boys’ uniforms but are very short of girls’ uniforms, (especially 10 yrs plus) so please donate anything that you no longer need.

HELP NEEDED PLEASE! Sabrina has also asked whether anybody may be available to help in the shop on the days that it’s open please? Please contact her on the PTA email address as above if you would be available to help, Thank you.

Yes it’s back by popular demand!! Wondering how to keep the kids occupied over the holidays? We may be able to help with that!!

Packs will be coming home with your child/ren this week and you will find all of the details that you need in there.

Sports News

Last Monday, our Year 5/6 basketball team, the SMCS Warriors, participated in their ACB Mini Ball League finals game. The Y6 Kohimarama team proved to be a tough opponent to beat but after a nail-biting 30 minutes, we came out on top.

With a final score of 34-24, our SMCS Warriors remain undefeated to win the top spot in their grade. Congratulations to Joaquin Ambrosio, Enzy Canapi, Charlie Goodare, Otis Thomassen, Jesse Robbins, Isaac Houghton, Anduin Arceo, Steele Wichman, Zayne Cabiling, Aidan Cruz, and Erin Cortez. Well done and we are so proud of you.

If you would like to watch the Warriors in action, games are held at St. Kentigerns every Monday night during term time and Wednesday night for our Year 3/4 team, the SMCS Saints.
