Tēnā koutou katoa St Michael’s Catholic School Community,

‘He aha te mea nui o te āo? He tangata, he tangata, he tangata!’
What is the most important thing in the world?
It is people, it is people, it is people!

‘There is a kindness that dwells deep down in things; it presides everywhere, often in the places we least expect. The world can be harsh and negative, but if we remain generous and patient, kindness inevitably reveals itself. Something deep in the human soul seems to depend on the presence of kindness; something instinctive in us expects it, and once we sense it we are able to trust and open ourselves.’
By John O’Donohue

We acknowledge that this is a difficult time for many in our school community, but particularly those families who have been directly impacted by COVID-19. Please continue to pray for the speedy recovery of these families.

I was lucky to be living on high ground with the terrible floods in West Auckland. My thoughts and prayers go out to those people who had to evacuate their homes.

Distance Learning Packs – for Wednesday 1 September to Friday 10 September

All of these packs were couriered out to you on Monday (some hand delivered thanks to Deahna). If you did not receive a pack then let the class teacher know and it can be emailed to you.

Junior School – PM eCollection

As we have a limited number of readers available for our Junior students to utilise, the school has purchased a subscription for each student to the PM eCollection. You will be familiar with this company, as they supply the bulk of the reading material we use within the Junior School.

This subscription will give your child access to familiar readers online, and will be available for teachers to use as Shared Stories within their Zoom lessons. The children are even able to record themselves reading and share this with their teacher! As the emphasis is on familiar reading, rather than new material, your child will have access to readers up to their current reading level.

Your child’s teacher will email you their log-in details at the start of next week, so that they can have a go at using this new platform.

Further extending of children’s learning

Families affected by COVID

We have heard this week that there are members of our own School Community now who have been directly affected by COVID. We would like to send our love, thoughts and prayers to them and all others affected in any way by this latest outbreak and lockdown.

If your family is struggling in some way and we can offer some type of support like picking up shopping etc, please email the PTA at ptasmcs@gmail.com.

Also, if you may be in a position to help other families in your local community, please contact us to let us know where you live and what you may be able to do. Thank you very much to those who have already.

Fit Mums’ Group – Now online during lockdown

All welcome!! Our Fit Mums group has moved online and we have classes Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings 8-8.30am via Zoom (before home-learning!) for $5.

They are Pilates strength based and also good for beginners. No equipment required, just space to work out and a mat/carpet. Children also welcome!

Please get in contact with Carmel if you’d like to be added to the group. Up to you which if any days you join! You can email Carmel at cshanly@yahoo.com or contact her via Mobile: 021 244 3141.

Yummy stickers

If you have ventured out to the supermarket and happen to have yummy stickers on some of your 5 a day, then please continue to collect the yummy stickers so that when we’re finally back to normality, we can get some sports equipment for the children to use at playtimes.

Please return them to school when we are back as this collection goes for terms 2 and 3 only. Please place them in the PTA postbox or give them directly to Mrs Barrington. Last year SMCS collected close to 6000 points, which equated to over $700 of playground and sports gear.

We hope that you are all coping well at home and we look forward to seeing everybody back safe and well in the very near future.
