Tēnā koutou katoa St Michael’s Catholic School Community,
“Ihu whakawhirinaki ahau ki a koe”
Jesus I trust in You
This week we had two special Feast Days: All Saints and All Souls Day. Normally we would have celebrated Mass with our community on these days but instead I watched these Masses through the Facebook page of Christ The King (https://www.facebook.com/ChristTheKingNZ/)
I am waiting anxiously to hear when schools can open again for all our students. I can assure you that All Staff on site are fully vaccinated and we will adhere to all the safety guidelines as set out by the Ministry of Health and Education.
Next year Lisa Jones is leaving us to move to the Hawkes Bay to be closer to her family. She has been teaching at our school for the past five years and will be greatly missed. The Board has appointed John Hazel for 2022.
Reports will be sent to you in Week 7 of Term 4. Teachers will make an overall teacher judgement from the work that has been submitted and from their zoom sessions with students. The Levels and Achievement indicators in the report will reflect these overall judgements at this point in time.
Year 4-6 ICAS Assessments @ home via Zoom
More information has been emailed to parents about the processes for administering these remaining assessments during remote learning.
- Thursday 4 November 9am – ICAS Science
- Thursday 11 November 9am – makeup opportunity to complete any missed ICAS: Digital Technologies, English, Mathematics or Science.
Please email Miss van Schaijik firstname.lastname@example.org if your child/ren need to be re-sent their one-time token to sit the test.
Class Placements 2022
We respectfully ask that you do not make requests for particular teachers or for specific children to be placed together next year. Our current class teachers will place children in next year’s classes based on a large number of factors. Please be reassured that the teachers know the children really well as learners. They have good insight into the different learning needs of the children and where and with whom they will do their best learning.
We have decided to hold Zoom meetings for the following events:
- New Families Evening – 18 November 7pm – 8pm
- Senior School Information Evening – 25 November 6:30pm – 7:15pm
- Camp 2022 information – 25 November – 7:30pm – 8pm

Parents/Parishioners who would like to be added to a fortnightly schedule of placing fresh flowers and tidying up the Reflective area are to please email Issa Cabiling at email@example.com.
Thank you to those who volunteered to be rostered for cleaning and replacing the fresh flowers. Not a big task. Just a quick wipe to remove leaves. Most important is replacing the fresh flowers – up to you how to source them. Doesn’t need to be bought, could be from your garden. And while you’re there, you can say the Hail Mary or recite the rosary.

November is the month in which we remember the dead
During this time we continue to pray for those who have gone before us in faith that they might be embraced by God.
For all who have died
“We remember in our prayers this November all who have died and gone before us to the loving arms of God.
They have gone no further from us than to God, and God is very near”

SMCS Parent Skool Loop App
A great communication tool to keep in touch with what is happening at SMCS. Follow the instructions below to download the Skool Loop App to your phone.
Families affected by COVID
We hope that you are continuing to cope in your bubbles and would just like to re-iterate that if your family is struggling in some way and we can offer some type of support like picking up shopping etc, please email the PTA at email@example.com.
Also, if you may be in a position to help other families in your local community, please contact us to let us know where you live and what you may be able to do. Thank you very much to those who have already.
Scholastic book orders
Unfortunately we won’t be able to hold book week this year, which also means that there will be no onsite book fair either. Luckily for us, Scholastic has created an online digital catalogue with home delivery. It’s a supersized issue full of Christmas goodies as well as the most popular books from 2021.
If you spend over $35 then delivery is free.
Ordering from the brochure is easy, it is all done online via LOOP (the Linked Online Ordering and Payment platform for parents). There are two ways you can order online:
- Visit mybookclub.scholastic.co.nz to set up your account and order through the website.
- Download the LOOP App (this is a different LOOP from the Skool LOOP App!) and follow the prompts.
There is an easy to follow guide how to do it:

Our School benefits hugely from your Book Club orders. Rewards points are earned through our spend, and these points are gifted back to the Teachers and Library at St Michaels School throughout the Year.
Fit Mums online classes
A huge Thank you to Carmel Hanly for the fantastic Fit Mums classes that she has been teaching regularly throughout the year. Everyone has had a really great time working out and it has been a fantastic way for the community to stay fit and connected. We wish Carmel all the very best with her new legal counsel role and look forward to seeing you in real life again soon!
I’m chuffed to be taking over the role of instructing these classes from next Monday, November 8th onwards…. I have strong shoes to fill!
The Fit Mums classes are all live on Zoom on Monday 8 – 8.30am, Wednesday 7.45-8.15am and Friday 8 – 8.30am. Each class is $5. You can choose which classes you would like to join in with or come to them all!
For those who are unable to make those times, I am considering recording these sessions, and then I will be able to send out the Zoom link for anyone who would like to do the class at a different time. The recordings will also be $5. It will only be my screen that is recorded, not everyone’s 🙂
Please let me know if you would like to join the group – firstname.lastname@example.org
My background is in Physiotherapy, Pilates/Yoga and functional training. For anyone who is keen to join the fit Mums group, but apprehensive about whether they are appropriate for you; please contact me so we can have a chat.
The Yummy stickers collection has been extended, so please continue to collect these if you have them on your fruit. When we return to school, please place them in the PTA postbox or give them directly to Mrs Barrington or if you have any ready to be sent now, please contact Mrs Barrington at email@example.com to arrange to get them to her for posting. Last year SMCS collected close to 6000 points, which equated to over $700 of playground and sports gear.

PTA (Zoom) meeting 8th Nov 2021
We will be holding a Zoom PTA meeting on 8th Nov at 7pm.
If you would like to attend then please contact us on firstname.lastname@example.org and we can send you the zoom link. We are starting to (optimistically!!) think about roles within the PTA for next year, if you would be interested in helping with any roles, please contact us on the above address. New people with different perspectives and ideas to help improve aspects of the school for the students and wider school community are always welcome.
Take care all
Ree, Sarah and PTA
