Tēnā koutou katoa St Michael’s Catholic School Community,
“He taonga rongonui te aroha ki te tangata”
Goodwill towards others is a precious treasure
It has been an absolute joy having our tamariki back at school this week. Hearing the shouts of laughter and play warms my heart. All the teachers are delighted to have their students back, school is such a special place to be. It was pleasing to see that Auckland has a date now for when the borders will be lifted.
I would like to pass on our condolences to the Houghton family on the passing of Emma’s mum Bev Handisides on the 2nd November. A very special Nana to Liam, Eva, Isaac and Rebecca. May She Rest in Peace.
Health and Safety Reminders
If a child is sick they need to stay at home.
- No parents on site
- Year 4 up to wear masks
- Washing/sanitising hands regularly
- Bring a named drink bottle (Staff can refill these as needed)
Class Dojo Portfolios and Google Classroom
Class Dojo Portfolios and Google Classroom have been an amazing way for the children to share their work and receive feedback from their teacher during periods of remote learning.
For those who are continuing to learn at home, please help your child to select just one piece of work each week to upload, and the teacher will give written feedback on this activity.
There will be a Zoom meeting for the following event:
- New Families Evening – rescheduled to 9 December, 7pm – 8pm
Year 6 Camp 2022 information – postponed
YMCA Camp Adair is working through protocols for the traffic light system. A new date will be arranged once we have more certainty.
Senior School Information Evening for Year 3, 2022
For parents of children going into Year 3 in 2022, you will be emailed an information pamphlet on devices to support BYOD (Bring Your Own Device). At this stage, we have decided not to hold an information evening due to health and safety and ongoing developments within our education sector at Alert Level 3.2 and as we transition into the traffic light – Red system.
Please have a read of the information then if you have any questions, please contact Georgina on [email protected].
Reports will be sent to you in Week 7 of Term 4. Teachers will make an overall teacher judgement from the work that has been submitted and from their zoom sessions with students. The Levels and Achievement indicators in the report will reflect these overall judgements at this point in time.
Class Placements 2022
We respectfully ask that you do not make requests for particular teachers, classrooms or for specific children to be placed together next year. Our current class teachers will place children in next year’s classes based on a large number of factors. Please be reassured that the teachers know the children really well as learners. They have good insight into the different learning needs of the children and where and with whom they will do their best learning.

Manaaki ki te Atua,
In the middle of this year the Government announced the Essential Property Maintenance Package (EPMP) for State Integrated Schools. This initiative is approved and managed through the Catholic Diocese of Auckland and enables schools to address some property items that might not otherwise get funded through the Diocese.
We are excited that the first of these projects is to upgrade the seating outside the Junior Block. This is a well-used area for the students and also a well frequented area by parents and siblings after school, particularly on a fine day. This work is planned to start this year and be completed by the start of Term 1, 2022.
The image below gives an idea of how the area will look.
Elizabeth Michaels School Uniform Shop

Scholastic book orders
As you are probably aware, we will be unable to hold our annual Book fair this year unfortunately.
Luckily for us, Scholastic has created an online digital catalogue with home delivery. It’s a supersized issue full of Christmas goodies as well as the most popular books from 2021. If you spend over $35 then delivery is free.
Ordering from the brochure is easy, it is all done online via LOOP (the Linked Online Ordering and Payment platform for parents).
There are two ways you can order online:
- Visit mybookclub.scholastic.co.nz to set up your account and order through the website.
- Download the LOOP App (this is a different LOOP from the Skool Loop App!) and follow the prompts.
There is an easy to follow guide how to do it: – Parent Guide to set up LOOP
Our School benefits hugely from your Book Club orders. Rewards points are earned through our spend, and these points are gifted back to the Teachers and Library at St Michaels School throughout the Year.
Second Hand School Uniform Shop
Unfortunately we are not able to operate the second hand school uniform shop at this time even as a contactless service. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.
We have had a few enquiries about what to do with Runathon money that has been collected. If you have collected money from completing the Runathon it will still be gratefully received and will be put towards new PE equipment for the children to use.
You may pay either in cash when returning to school next week or by direct credit into the PTA bank account 12-3075-0199134-00.
We realise that some families will have been having a pretty hard time during lockdown and this notice is in no way meant to put you under any pressure to find money to donate. There are ‘completion’ stickers at school for your child’s completed Runathon form.
The Yummy stickers collection has been extended, so please continue to collect these if you have them on your fruit. When we return to school, please place them in the PTA postbox or give them directly to Mrs Barrington
Last year SMCS collected close to 6000 points, which equated to over $700 of playground and sports gear.

PTA (Zoom) meeting 8th Nov 2021
We held a Zoom PTA meeting last Monday evening.
We are starting to (optimistically!!) think about roles within the PTA for next year, if you would be interested in helping with any roles, please contact us at [email protected]. New people with different perspectives and ideas to help improve aspects of the school for the students and wider school community are always welcome.
Next PTA Meeting date TBC.
Take care all
Ree, Sarah and PTA
