Tēnā koutou katoa St Michael’s Catholic School Community,
‘Kia ngangahau, kia whakawhānuitia te Rongopai a te Karaiti’
To live and proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ
There are only seven and a half days of school left (school finishes on Tuesday 14 December at 12:30pm) and what a tough year it has been. It saddens me that we are unable to celebrate our Thanksgiving Mass to acknowledge all our Year 6 students and those families that are leaving our school. I pray that all our families keep safe and well coming up to Christmas.
Year 6 Leavers’ Liturgy and Presentation
As much as we would love to farewell our Year 6 Graduates in our beautiful Church, we are confined by Alert Level 3, Step 2 restrictions so will be having a Liturgy on the upper court to bless and farewell our Year 6 Graduates. Mrs McKeown will present Graduation certificates and leavers’ candles.
In order to maintain the integrity of the bubbles from Rooms 8 & 9, the liturgy will be held on Monday 13 December at 10am (Group A) and repeated on Tuesday 14 December at 10am (Group B). The classes will remain in their individual bubbles and distanced appropriately when outside. It will be a special time for their Year 5 peers also in those bubbles to support and thank the Year 6’s.
We will endeavour to post photos on Class Dojo as no parents, classes or other visitors will be able to attend.
End of Year Prizegiving!
Each class will be awarded 4 Catholic Character Awards and 4 Diligence Awards. In light of the update that we will be continuing as we are until the end of the year, Mrs McKeown will present the certificates in class when students are at school in Week 9. If children are working at home, certificates will be able to be collected from the office.

HEPA Filters for all classrooms (and other areas of the school that need them)
We are really excited to let you know that we have worked together with the Board and Mrs McKeown to purchase HEPA filters that will go into every classroom in the school.
As a PTA we have committed to provide the filters and ongoing maintenance of them for the next 5 years at least. Some families have also already very kindly offered to donate towards the cost of these filters. If you would also like to donate, please contact the PTA on [email protected] as any donations would be gratefully received, and it will help us to marry donations received into the bank account. Any donations should be labelled ‘HEPA filters’ as a reference for payment.
Second Hand School Uniform Shop
Unfortunately as Parents are not allowed on the school site at present, we are not able to operate the second hand school uniform shop at any time this term even as a contactless service.
SHOP OPENING FOR ONE DAY ONLY BEFORE TERM 1 STARTS
Sabrina has offered to open for one afternoon before we return to school at 3pm – 3.30pm on 25th Jan 2022 before school starts next year, which will still allow time to go to Elizabeth Michael too if necessary.
If you are unable to make this time and date, please email Sabrina via the [email protected] address and we will pass on any queries to her, preferably prior to 25th Jan as she can check for stock on that date and try and arrange a contactless pick up for you.
If you have uniform to donate to the shop, please send it in to the school office by the end if term if possible so that it may be added to the shop for the January 25th opening date. School have asked us to reiterate – PLEASE ONLY SEND UNIFORMS IN WITH YOUR CHILD, Parents are asked not enter the school site at all.
Runathon money – last chance to get your money in next Monday!!
Thank you for those who have been sending in Runathon money, this will be put towards new PE equipment for the children to use. The last date for sending in your money is Monday 6th December (next Monday).
You may pay either by sending cash into school or by direct credit into the PTA bank account 12-3075-0199134-00.
We realise that some families will have been having a pretty hard time during lockdown and this notice is in no way meant to put you under any pressure to find money to donate. There are ‘completion’ stickers at school for your child’s completed Runathon form please see Mrs Barrington to get a sticker for your chart.
The Yummy stickers collection ended on 23rd November
Please continue to collect the stickers for next year. The collection runs during Terms 2 and 3. Please place any completed forms in the PTA postbox or give them directly to Mrs Barrington.
Last year SMCS collected close to 6000 points, which equated to over $700 of playground and sports gear.

End of Term class get togethers
Sadly, as per the Ministries of Health and Education guidelines, we are not allowed to hold any end of term class picnics at school this year.
PTA past, present and future
We would like to say a big ‘Thank you’ to all of the many volunteers who have helped with the events that we HAVE been able to hold during the past year. (Not to mention the time that some people had already spent planning and organising events that we weren’t able to hold in the past term or so).
We would especially like to thank all of the members of the PTA who work tirelessly behind the scenes to make events a success. We would particularly like to say a final ‘Thank you’ to those members with children in Year 6 who have given their support over the many years that their children have been a part of the school, we will certainly miss you all.
If you would be interested in helping either generally or with any particular roles within the PTA in the upcoming year, please contact us on [email protected]. New people with different perspectives and ideas to help improve aspects of the school for the students and wider school community are always welcome.
We’d also like to say a big ‘Thank you’ to all of the Class reps who have kept information flowing to and from the classrooms in this challenging year. Also, if you would be keen to volunteer as a Class Rep for next year please email us and let us know.
Next meeting date TBC.
Take care all
Ree, Sarah and PTA
