Happy New Year and Welcome to 2022

I hope you all had a lovely well deserved break over Christmas and took some time to relax after our unusual year. I had a lovely Christmas with our family whom I had not been able to see for such a long time.

Mathematics at SMCS 2022

The teaching of mathematics is currently under the microscope in many countries including New Zealand. A recent report has highlighted that student achievement in mathematics (as measured by PISA) has declined steeply in the last two decades and this has been a cause of concern.

Pedagogical practice in education often swings between extremes whereas often the solution is one of balance. We know our students excel at something when they understand what to do, are knowledgeable, successful and stimulated. Explicit mathematics instruction will provide the skills and once mastered students will have sufficient expertise to engage in student led activities in the classroom.

As a result of research and information gathering we have made the decision to implement the Maths No Problem programme for Years 1 to 6. We believe this programme will provide a more balanced approach to mathematics and raise the level of achievement in Mathematics.

During the Teacher Only Days the teachers were trained in the programme and they are excited to be implementing it. They will be given support and additional training throughout the year.

Ideally we would like to have held a parent information evening about Maths No Problem but instead invite you to familiarise yourself with the programme by reading the attached PDF for more information.

A New Year Blessing (John O’Donohue)

On the day when the weight deadens on your shoulders and you stumble,
May the city dance to balance you.

And when your eyes freeze behind the grey window and the ghost of loss gets into you,
May a flock of colours, indigo, red, green and azure blue, come to awaken in you a meadow of delight.

When the canvas frays in the currach of thought and a stain of ocean blackens beneath you, may there come across the waters a path of yellow moonlight to bring you safely home.

May the nourishment of the earth be yours, may the clarity of light be yours,
May the fluency of the ocean be yours, may the protection of the ancestors be yours.

And so may a slow wind work these words of love around you,
An invisible cloak to mind your life.

Manaaki ki te Atua,
Ann McKeown

PTA this coming year

As you can appreciate, we are not sure at this stage quite what events we will be able to organise, but we are hoping that we can plan some things for the year ahead.

If you would be interested in helping either generally or with any particular roles within the PTA in the upcoming year, please contact us on [email protected] New people with different perspectives and ideas to help improve aspects of the school for the students and wider school community are always welcome.

Class Reps

We’d also like to say a big ‘Thank you’ to all of our new Class reps Volunteers. Some classes only have one rep, if yours is one of those and you would be keen to help out, then please let your class rep know, they will be glad of a buddy!

Pizza & Ice Block Friday team

Sylvie Kirton (Mum to Raphael, Lilou, and William) has kindly offered to organise Pizza & Ice Block Friday this year. It would be great to have 2-3 volunteers that are happy to help Sylvie out on Friday’s. It would involve an hour or so at lunchtime getting pizzas/ice blocks ready to hand out and taking payments. Plans are being made based on alert levels and how the PTA can run this popular Friday lunch option, keeping our children and Community safe.

If you are able to join Sylvie on the team this year, please email us on [email protected].

Next PTA meeting

Next PTA meeting date 15th Feb 7pm (via zoom).

Please email us on the PTA email if you would like to be sent the zoom link to join us. We’d love to have your company whether you are an old hand or brand new to the school!

Take care all
