Tēnā koutou katoa St Michael’s Catholic School Community,
“Ihu whakawhirinaki ahau ki a koe”
Jesus I trust in You
We are now in the season of Lent. Pope Francis shared this message: ”Lent is a favourable time for personal and community renewal, as it leads us to the paschal mystery of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. For our Lenten journey in 2022, we will do well to reflect on Saint Paul’s exhortation to the Galatians: “Let us not grow tired of doing good, for in due time we shall reap our harvest, if we do not give up. So then, while we have the opportunity (kairós), let us do good to all” (Gal 6:9-10).
Welcome to New Families and Students
We would like to welcome the following new family who has joined us this Year: The Hibberd Family.
Year 6 Leaders Mass – 3 March at 2pm
This was such a joyous occasion to celebrate the Eucharist with our Year 6 Leaders. Their leadership roles were disclosed and their badges were blessed by Fr Chris Skinner. Thank you to the Parish, Fr Tony and Issa Cabiling for organising the live stream. It was lovely that the whole school could join us virtually.
COVID – 19
We now have a growing number of Covid-19 cases that have been identified throughout our whole school community (Staff, parents and students). We will continue to be vigilant in accordance with the school’s Health and Safety procedures. It is important that anyone with symptoms remain at home until they are symptom-free for at least 48 hours.
We have enough full-time staff members to cover up to two classrooms of children, should their teachers test positive. If we have three or more teachers test positive at one time, we will need to close the affected classrooms until the teacher is able to return to work. We will continue to keep you well-informed.
Please notify us as soon as possible if a member of your household tests positive for COVID-19. The details we require are as follows:
- Case Type: (Student, Parent, Sibling, Other)
- Onsite while infectious: Yes / No
- Date of Test:
- Type of Test:

A Prayer for Ukraine
“Loving God, We pray for the people of Ukraine, for all those suffering or afraid, that you will be close to them and protect them.
We pray for world leaders, for compassion, strength and wisdom to guide their choices.
We pray for the world that in this moment of crisis, we may reach out in solidarity to our brothers and sisters in need.
May we walk in your ways so that peace and justice become a reality for the people of Ukraine and for all the world. Amen.’ (https://cafod.org.uk/)
Manaaki ki te Atua,
We hope that you are all coping with the new ‘normal’ that we find ourselves in. It’s been great to hear of so many offers of help and support within classrooms.
Help for families self isolating
We are aware that there are members of our SMCS Community who have been directly affected by Covid, and who are currently isolating at home with their families. As a PTA we would love to help, so please feel free to email us on [email protected] if you need something. We have many members/parents who may live close by, or are happy to drive by and drop supplies off – pick up groceries if you’re finding it hard getting an online delivery spot – source some ice blocks for the kids – arrange takeaways and meals to take the pressure off when you are not feeling well etc. You can also email/contact your Class Rep who can then be in touch with us and pass messages on. Take care.
School Uniform Shop – now not open on site this Friday
Please note that due to the increase in Covid cases at School, the school uniform shop will only be open online at present. Sabrina will be going to school to check for stock on Friday mornings only, as she is limiting her visits to school.
Therefore please email Sabrina with your enquiries via [email protected] and we will pass them on. Elizabeth Michael remains open for more urgent and brand new Uniform needs. We still need more stock of all sizes please. If you have any uniform to donate, please send it in with your child.

HEPA Filter update
We are pleased to confirm that in December 2021, 17 HEPA Filters were bought and installed in classrooms and other areas of the school where they were deemed necessary i.e. sick bay, break out rooms etc.
These filters are used all day every school day and their main objective is to provide a healthier environment for our children and staff at school. The cost of these filters is not covered by the Ministry of Education: therefore, the PTA re-prioritised expenditure, using existing funds to pay towards the units and placing other projects (such as air conditioning in the breakout rooms to make them more comfortable and usable in the summer) on hold temporarily. Unfortunately, due to disruption that we all faced last year, our fundraising efforts fell very short of usual.
Many Families in the SMCS community have expressed an interest in making donations towards the cost of the HEPA filter units. If your family would like to make a financial contribution, towards the cost of these filters, $388 would fund one filter, but any contribution would be gratefully received – thank you.
Please forward donation to the PTA bank account:
