Thursday 17 March – St Patrick’s Day & Caritas fundraiser for Ukraine (gold coin donation)
On Thursday it is St Patrick’s Day so everyone is encouraged to dress up in green! (green mufti – no uniform required on this day).
We would like to take this opportunity to fundraise for Caritas to help Ukraine. Please bring a gold coin donation that will be transferred to Caritas to support Ukraine’s emergency fund.
Our Caritas partners are on the ground providing: assistance for displaced families providing information, free meals, water, and hygiene supplies as they flee to safer territories; emergency shelters with regular meals and hygiene facilities for families with no other accommodation options; transportation to help displaced families move through conflict zones safely and reach friends, family, and service providers and psychological support for families.
Let’s continue to pray for all those affected in Ukraine and neighbouring countries.
COVID – 19 Changes
The isolation period for Covid-19 cases and household contacts will be reduced from 10 to seven days from midnight Friday 11 March. Household contacts will need to have a rapid antigen test at day 3 and day 7 of their isolation period. It is important that anyone with symptoms remain at home until they are symptom-free for at least 24 hours.
We have enough full-time staff members to cover up to two classrooms of children, should their teachers test positive. If we have three or more teachers test positive at one time, we will need to close the affected classrooms until the teacher is able to return to work. We will continue to keep you well-informed.
Health and Safety
- Monitor for symptoms (sore tummy, colds, sore throat , hay fever etc)
- If a child is sick they need to stay at home.
- Year 4 up to wear masks
- Washing/sanitising hands regularly (contactless sanitiser dispensers are in every room)
- Classrooms are well ventilated and have Hepa Filters and each class now has CO2 monitors.
Principal’s Awards Certificates
I will be presenting weekly Principal’s Award Certificates to students in their classes each Friday. I will also present the Swimming Sports’ certificates at this time. A photo will be taken of the students and posted onto their Class Dojo.

Lenten Prayer of the Day
‘Lord, I’m not always eager to do your will. I’d often much rather do my own will. Please be with me on this Lenten journey and help me to remember that your own spirit can guide me in the right direction. I want to fix my weaknesses but the task seems overwhelming. But I know that with your help, anything can be done. With a grateful heart, I acknowledge your love and know that without you, I can do nothing.’ (https://onlineministries.creighton.edu/)
Manaaki ki te Atua,
Help for families self isolating
We are aware that there are an increasing number of members of our SMCS Community who have been directly affected by Covid, and who are currently isolating at home with their families. As a PTA we would love to help, so please feel free to email us on [email protected] if you need something. We have many members/parents who may live close by, or are happy to drive by and drop supplies off – pick up groceries if you’re finding it hard getting an online delivery spot – source some ice blocks for the kids – arrange takeaways and meals to take the pressure off when you are not feeling well etc. You can also email/contact your Class Rep who can then be in touch with us and pass messages on. Take care.
Pizza Fridays and My Kindo app.
Thank you to Room 9 Parents for helping with pizza this week. The new way of ordering pizza and sushi seems to be working well.
In case you missed it, please refer to the school lunch section on the home page of the school website or the last 2 week’s newsletters for more information.
myKindo app is also available to download for both Android and iPhone.
If you should have any problems, try the helpline options above or in the case of pizza problems please contact us on [email protected]. Thank you.
HEPA Filter update
We are pleased to confirm that in December 2021, 17 HEPA Filters were bought and installed in classrooms and other areas of the school where they were deemed necessary i.e. sick bay, break out rooms etc.
These filters are used all day every school day and their main objective is to provide a healthier environment for our children and staff at school. The cost of these filters is not covered by the Ministry of Education: therefore, the PTA re-prioritised expenditure, using existing funds to pay towards the units and placing other projects (such as air conditioning in the breakout rooms to make them more comfortable and usable in the summer) on hold temporarily. Unfortunately, due to disruption that we all faced last year, our fundraising efforts fell very short of usual.
Many Families in the SMCS community have expressed an interest in making donations towards the cost of the HEPA filter units. If your family would like to make a financial contribution, towards the cost of these filters, $388 would fund one filter, but any contribution would be gratefully received – thank you.
Please forward donation to the PTA bank account:

Volunteer positions available!!
We have two roles that we are trying to fill at the moment and would love to hear from you if you would be interested in taking one of these roles on we are happy to provide more information before you commit!
As you know, the Caring Shed has been in our school for many years. We welcome good quality items that you would like to donate which are collected by Monte Cecilia and donated to help furnish homes for families in need of emergency or temporary accommodation.
We need a volunteer to oversee the shed and liaise with Monte Cecelia directly to arrange for pick up when the shed is full. Last year the outreach leaders were also involved in this process and really enjoyed seeing what happened to the goods that were donated.
Please contact us if this may be a role that you would be interested in taking on.
We are also looking for someone enthusiastic and organised to take on the role of Calendar art co-ordinator. This is a great fundraising initiative that usually takes place in Term 3.
We have all the information that you need to get started. If you are interested in either of the 2 roles mentioned above, please email us on [email protected] to find out more.
Next PTA meeting
Next (Zoom) PTA meeting date is this coming Monday – 15th Mar at 7pm, please email us on [email protected] if you would like the zoom link to join. We always welcome new faces and voices so please feel free to join.
Take care all
Ree, Sarah and the PTA
