Tēnā koutou katoa St Michael’s Catholic School Community,
“Whāia te mātauranga hei oranga mō koutou”
Seek after learning for the sake of your wellbeing.
Last week we began our three-year learning journey with the ERO (the Educational Review Office).
We look forward to working alongside ERO to ensure that our school continues to perform to a very high standard, and provides the best educational outcomes for our lovely children.
It has been an exciting week for our staff, with a number attending Spiritus Aotearoa NZ. This has been an opportunity to share understanding, knowledge, best practice, and contemporary approaches to evangelization and faith formation for tamariki and rangatahi in Catholic education settings. Attending staff members are looking forward to sharing their learning with the remainder of our team at an upcoming staff meeting.
Don’t forget that the Disney-themed School Disco is fast approaching! Please check through the notice attached to pre-purchase tokens. We are looking forward to seeing you there!

Prayer intention for the month of June
Pope Francis has announced that his prayer intention for the month of June is families. The pope describes the family as “the place where we learn to live with one another, to live with young people and those who are older.”
The choice is fitting, since families from around the world will gather in Rome later this month.
“Let us pray for Christian families around the world; may each and every family embody and experience unconditional love, and advance in holiness in their daily lives. Amen.” Pope Francis.

School Board Elections Information 2022
Our school will be undertaking a parent election for 5 School Board vacancies.
This process will start with the issuing of nomination papers to our caregiver community by Friday 15th July 2022.
We have employed CES to undertake the election process on our behalf. This year with legislative change, our nomination form and full instruction on how to place your nomination into our own School’s Election website will be emailed to you if we have your email address in our database or you will receive it by post if we don’t have your email in our database.
Nomination papers will also be available at the school office. The school will send those on to CES for processing upon receipt from candidates.
Nominations close on Wednesday 3rd August at 12 noon. Election day is Wednesday 7th September.
We look forward to your participation in this process.
Education Review Office (ERO)
The Education Review Office (ERO) has shifted to a more developmental approach to evaluation that supports each school’s improvement over time. Key features of the new approach, Te Ara Huarau, are that ERO will:
- work with all schools in an ongoing way rather than as a one-off event
- connect with each school’s strategic planning and reporting cycle as part of their improvement journey
- work in partnership with schools, collaborating in support of equitable and excellent outcomes for all learners
As a result, each school will:
- have a dedicated ERO Evaluation Partner who works alongside the school
- have a different experience depending on needs, strengths, and their school’s specific evaluation focus
- be on a three-year evaluation cycle
What will public reporting on ERO’s website look like?
As schools’ transition into the approach, ERO will work with schools to publish a one-off Profile Report. This will focus on the strategic goals schools have in place to improve learner outcomes and what the school is seeking to achieve through the evaluation.
Within a three year cycle all schools will then have a Te Ara Huarau | School Evaluation Report. This report includes information about the school’s improvement journey, what the school has achieved for learners and their future priorities.
All schools will receive a Board Assurance with Regulatory and Legislative Requirements Report about their board’s attestation to meeting those requirements. Provision for International Students and Hostel Reports will be published where applicable.
Progress Reports – These reports are not published on ERO’s website. Progress reports will provide specific information for specific audiences such as your board, the community or the Ministry of Education.

SMCS Upcoming Event
This year we are excited to announce the St Michael’s Talent Extravaganza. This is an opportunity for the SMCS children to show the community their amazing talents. It will be held in the school hall at 4.00pm on Friday the 19th of August (Week 4, Term 3).
Some examples of talents: singing, dancing, magic, comedy routines, dramatic skits, juggling, yo‐yo tricks, mime, gymnastics, reciting poetry, playing an instrument… the list goes on!
Auditions will be held lunchtime Tuesday the 2nd and Wednesday the 3rd of August (Week 2, Term 3). The sign up sheet will be available in Room 5 with Miss Brown, come see her before or after school.
We are currently on the hunt for a couple of ‘experts’ who would be willing to donate their time as a guest judge, so if you know someone who is ‘NZ famous’ please contact Miss Brown, thanks!
If you have any further questions, please contact Miss Lauren Brown either in her class (Room 5) or via [email protected]
This year we have a focus for the funds raised from our Disney Disco – we are proud to announce that with your fundraising efforts we have been able to supply St Michael’s with a set of Sphero Robotic Balls. These classroom tools are used to support the teaching of coding and digital skills in a fun and engaging way. Children write code which directs the robotic ball where to move and can be used with children who are just beginning to write code and those who are more experienced. Thank you for supporting our fundraising projects.

Please remember – all tickets & tokens purchased are non-refundable.
CO-CHAIR Roles are available from Beginning of Term 3
It has been our absolute pleasure serving the SMCS Community through our time in the Co-chair roles over the past 18 months. However, we have both recognised the need to step down at this stage so that we can best focus on our own families, and current work commitments.
In order to do so, Sarah and I have officially handed in our resignations effective at the end of Term Two (Friday, 10th July).
The Co-Chair role is a fabulous opportunity for someone (ideally two people) who have approximately 4-5 hour available each week, would like to be more involved in the SMCS Community, and have the time & energy to coordinate the amazing PTA team.
We have a PTA Co-Chair job description, and are happy to run through it with anyone interested.
Please email the PTA ([email protected]) or give Ree a call (0276 523 014) if you would like to find out more.
Thanks, and take care.
Ree, Sarah and the PTA
SMCS Basketball 3-on-3 Tournament
Hi Parents. It’s been a great few weeks of SMCS basketball and we are glad to see a lot of kids enjoying our weekly sessions.
To cap off term 2, we are planning to have a 3-on-3 basketball tournament for the last 3 weeks of term 2.
We will have this tournament on Wednesdays from 4:30pm onwards, starting on 22 June (and the other dates are 29 June, and 06 July).
At this stage we are gauging interest and checking if your child wishes to participate. There will be no cost for this and we need to have confirmation this week to check numbers and also draft the teams. We will have 2 divisions: Years 3/4 and Years 5/6.
Please email me at [email protected] to confirm if your child will be able to participate.
Indicate the name and year of your child.
