Tēnā koutou katoa St Michael’s Catholic School Community,
“Poipoia te kakano Kia puawai”
Nurture the seed and it will blossom
We have come to the end of Term 2, after a busy and productive term. I wish you all a safe and happy break over the holidays. I will keep you all in my prayers over Term 3 while on my sabbatical.
Twenty eight students from SMCS made their First Holy Communion on Sunday 3 July at St Michael’s Parish. An enormous thank you to Emma Houghton and Deahna Barrington for organising this event, they both have run the Becoming Church programme for the past seven years.
YCC Day (previously Mufti Mania) – Friday 8 July
Tomorrow, Friday 8 July, we are supporting Caritas New Zealand to raise money for Laura Vicuna School in Bethlehem. Please wear mufti and bring a gold coin donation if you are able.
A registered Social Worker/counsellor is available, on a part time basis, to provide free consultations to St Michael’s students, staff and parishioners. Help can be given to provide guidance with accessing specialist support, or who may be struggling with more complex challenges. Please contact the Parish Office on 09 520 1226 to make an appointment. All discussions are conducted in strictest confidence.
Year 5/6 Sports Exchange for the Senior School

We need help to transport our students to these events at 1pm and pick up from the venue at 2.30pm. If you can assist please email Georgina van Schaijik [email protected]
Health and Safety and Ventilation
We have been asked by a number of parents why we have our windows open? The science behind this is presented in the following YouTube clip where Nanogirl clarifies the science behind classroom ventilation, particularly in terms of reducing the risk of COVID-19 transmission: COVID-19 Classroom Ventilation Theories
COVID-19 is going to be around for a while so it is important that you follow these Health and Safety guidelines:
- Wear a mask when on site and especially if you enter our school building.
- If a child is sick they need to stay at home
- Year 4 up are strongly recommended to wear masks indoors (please ensure they have a mask for Meditation and Assemblies).
- Sanitise / wash your hands regularly

Prayer For the end of Term 2
“We thank you Lord, for this term. For the challenges, the successes, and the mistakes from which we have learnt. Be with us over our two week break as we spend our time with family and friends. Give us strength and courage to do what is right: to be witnesses of our faith. Help us to be a practical Christian these holidays, to appreciate what others do for us, to give time and effort to help others. To be peacemakers in our family. Keep us safe in our activities; give us good rest and good fun. Bring us back refreshed and ready for a new term. We thank you for our students, teachers, parents and a community that cares for us. May we always be conscious of you in our lives”

SMCS Upcoming Event
This year we are excited to announce the St Michael’s Talent Extravaganza. This is an opportunity for the SMCS children to show the community their amazing talents. It will be held in the school hall at 4.00pm on Friday the 19th of August (Week 4, Term 3).
Some examples of talents: singing, dancing, magic, comedy routines, dramatic skits, juggling, yo‐yo tricks, mime, gymnastics, reciting poetry, playing an instrument… the list goes on!
Auditions will be held throughout the school day on Thursday 4 August (Week 2, Term 3). The sign up sheet will be available in Room 5 with Miss Brown, come see her before or after school.
We are currently on the hunt for a couple of ‘experts’ who would be willing to donate their time as a guest judge, so if you know someone who is ‘NZ famous’ please contact Miss Brown, thanks!
If you have any further questions, please contact Miss Lauren Brown either in her class (Room 5) or via [email protected]
**The opportunity for the PTA to have a new Chairperson/Co-Chairs is still available**
An option is to step up into a ‘caretaker role’ for Term 3 & 4 this year, while we look for a new person or two to take over the Chairperson role for 2023.
The role of the PTA Chairperson/s is an important position within the PTA that helps to provide guidance for driving PTA initiatives and events. The Chairperson is supported by the Secretary, Treasurer, class representatives and many active PTA members who generously give their time and energy to uplift our school experience.
As we approach the end of Term Two we are reflecting on how grateful we are that we have been able to come together as a Community and celebrate many things we have been missing over the past two years. Assemblies, Meditations in the Hall, Masses, Working Bees and School Discos are all part of what makes our SMCS Community so precious.
More specifically from the PTA – pizza & ice block Fridays, the second hand uniform shop, Scholastic books, social events, and many more initiatives that often fly under the radar, but are appreciated by all.
The social events for the remainder of 2022 have already been booked out & roles allocated within the PTA – team leads have been appointed and preparation is already in progress for most events. Time & energy required for the Chair/Co-chair role does not necessarily need to be within school hours, and the role is extremely flexible to suit the individual.
Sarah and I have enjoyed our time as Co-Chairs of the PTA enormously, and are very keen to see this role be filled so that many of the above activities can continue. It was a difficult decision to hand in our resignation effective at the end of this week, however we do need to find one or two people who would like to take over our roles so that we can do a thorough handover for the beginning of Term 3. As mentioned in the newsletters, Sarah and I will both still remain on the PTA and be here to help out to make the transition as smooth as possible.
If you are keen to get involved, and are curious about the role of Chair/Co-Chair of our PTA please feel free to give me a call on 0276 523 014, or email on [email protected].
