Tēnā koutou katoa St Michael’s Catholic School Community,

“Kia mau ki te tokanga nui-a-noho”
There is no place like home.

A very warm welcome back to Term 3! It was lovely to see the majority of our students back and to hear about some of the fun and special activities that families enjoyed during the break.

Welcome to New Families and Students

We would like to welcome the following new, existing and returning families who have joined us this term: Canlas family (younger sibling), Landers family (younger sibling), Wong family (new to SMCS), Martin-Buitron family (younger sibling), Cheung family (new to SMCS) and the Kravtsov family (returning from O/seas).

Health and Safety and Ventilation

There has been an increase in winter illnesses in schools at the start of Term 3 as students bring back infections after travelling and socialising during the holidays. This year cases of COVID-19 are increasing in most parts of the country, and we are also seeing high numbers of other winter illnesses.

For the start of Term 3, 2022, the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Health strongly recommend that all schools and kura require mask wearing in all indoor settings (where it will not have a significant impact on teaching and learning – see below) for students in Years 4 and above for the first four weeks of term.

COVID-19 is going to be around for a while so it is important that you follow these Health and Safety guidelines:

  • Wear a mask when on site and especially if you enter our school building.
  • If a child is sick they need to stay at home
  • Year 4 up are strongly recommended to wear masks indoors (please ensure they have a mask for Meditation and Assemblies).
  • Sanitise / wash your hands regularly

Bassett Road Gate

If you arrive at school after 8.55am, or enter/depart school during the day via the Bassett Road Gate, please ensure that you close the gate securely behind you. It is important that we keep our students safe. Thank you for your help with this.

Catholic Foundation Caring Mass & Awards 2022

Congratulations to Himaya, Xavier and Charlotte who were nominated to attend the annual Catholic Caring Foundation Mass with Bishop Steve Lowe on Wednesday 27 July 2022 at Christ the King Parish, Owairaka.

The Caring Mass is a special time to celebrate the outstanding compassion shown so far in their final year at St Michael’s Catholic School. These students embody the values of Saint Mary Mackillop in all that they do and lead by example to younger students. During the Mass, Bishop Steve blessed the students and they received a certificate which will be presented at assembly next week too.

“Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did to me.” (Matthew 25:40)
