Tēnā koutou katoa St Michael’s Catholic School Community,

“Me mahi tahi tātou mō te oranga o te katoa.”
We should work together for the wellbeing of everyone.

It was lovely to catch up with a few members of the PTA on Monday evening. This week’s whakataukī summarises what our current community need is all about! The PTA would love for some new members to join. This is a wonderful opportunity to be a part of the school community and ensure continued opportunities and resources for our children.

Your contribution could include assisting a current member with a role in order to learn the ropes i.e.: Pizza Friday; AND/OR committing to help with a one-off event i.e.: Grandparents Cultural Day or organising Calendar Art.

Joining the PTA does not mean involving yourself in every aspect or at every event – many hands make light work!

Please keep your eyes peeled for more information about the different roles that exist in the hope that one takes your interest!

Health and Safety and Ventilation

There has been an increase in winter illnesses in schools at the start of Term 3 as students bring back infections after travelling and socialising during the holidays. This year cases of COVID-19 are increasing in most parts of the country, and we are also seeing high numbers of other winter illnesses.

For the start of Term 3, 2022, the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Health strongly recommend that all schools and kura require mask wearing in all indoor settings (where it will not have a significant impact on teaching and learning – see below) for students in Years 4 and above for the first four weeks of term.

COVID-19 is going to be around for a while so it is important that you follow these Health and Safety guidelines:

  • Wear a mask when on site and especially if you enter our school building.
  • If a child is sick they need to stay at home
  • Year 4 up are strongly recommended to wear masks indoors (please ensure they have a mask for Meditation and Assemblies).
  • Sanitise / wash your hands regularly

Harrison Tew Emergency Management Plan

St Michael’s Catholic School utilises an external agency, Harrison Tew, to guide emergency planning and responses. We are aware that we have some parents who are concerned about the prospect of bomb threats and want to keep you informed that Harrison Tew has been in contact and we have updated guidelines regarding a threat of this nature.

In a manner of timely coincidence, on Tuesday 16 August, Harrison Tew will be onsite leading a student assembly to revise lockdown and evacuation practices. Should there be any family whanau updates, these will be communicated after their visit.

Bassett Road Gate

If you arrive at school after 8.55am, or enter/depart school during the day via the Bassett Road Gate, please ensure that you close the gate securely behind you. It is important that we keep our students safe. Thank you for your help with this.

Need help?

A registered Social Worker/counsellor is available, on a part time basis, to provide free consultations to St Michael’s students, staff and parishioners. Help can be given to provide guidance with accessing specialist support, or who may be struggling with more complex challenges. Please contact the Parish Office on 09 520 1226 to make an appointment. All discussions are conducted in strictest confidence.

School Board Elections Information & Timeline 2022

Nominations have now closed and CES will update the schools parent portals to give a final position. Please be patient as they received 450 nominations yesterday (3 August 2022) via email and will be manually enter data into the school portals. This will take some time.

CES will then be working to finalise voting papers and profiles with voting papers out by email on Wednesday 10 August 2022. This will give information about what to do and where to go to put your vote forward electronically.

Please check your spam filters (especially emails that have a gmail address).

Those without valid email addresses will be mailed voting papers. Voting papers are barcoded, pin numbered and have a unique identifier so voting can only be done once. A courier bag will be provided to school to receive any votes that come across the school counter.

Election day is Wednesday 7th September.

Children’s Liturgy

Liturgy of the Word with Children at St Michael’s Parish- Recommencing for Term 3

Children’s Liturgy is recommencing at the 10 am Sunday Mass. It will run again during the school term in the Parish Centre.

Our aim is for primary aged children to receive the Word of God at a level of understanding for their age and to discover its meaning in their lives, whilst giving parents/carers the opportunity to remain in the church and hear the Word of God themselves.

The group re-joins the congregation during the Prayers of the Faithful, ready for the Liturgy of the Eucharist part of the Mass.

Pre-schoolers are welcome with a carer and primary school children can attend independently. (Of course, adults always welcome.)

Anyone wanting more information or wanting to volunteer as a leader please email
Susan[email protected] or chat to Deahna Barrington.

Pizza Fridays

Thank you to Room 3 Parents for helping with Pizza this week.

Thank you to you all for your continuing support of Pizza Fridays. The children love it, we really appreciate it, and it raises funds for resources for School.

We really rely on parental help to make this a success and to be able to continue to keep this service running for the children. We need 2 volunteers per room and only requires about an hour of your time
once a term. Your class parent will let you know when it’s your room’s turn.

Food donations at Thursday class Masses

Towards the end of last term we restarted the non-perishable food donations at the offertory during class Masses. Please feel free to donate non-perishable food at any time to the basket outside Genevieve’s office, but especially if it is your room’s turn for Mass. All donations are given to Monte Cecilia alongside those donations given by the Parish and given to needy families.

Gardening with the students- Help required please

Jim and Lucy’s Friday afternoon gardening is back on! It has been great being able to get back in the garden these past months with the kids. Last Term we planted puriri seeds and garlic gloves with Room 7 and Room 10.

Each child took ownership of their own seeds with named wooden sticks. They are able to visit their seeds and check on the progress of the new green shoots. We have also been teaching the kids about veggie gardening generally, life cycles of plants and where their food comes from. The kids love it!

We are hoping to work our way around all the senior (and junior) classes by the end of the year. We would love any extra parent help from 1:45 – 3pm on a Friday afternoon. No previous gardening experience required. Please email [email protected] if you are able to help. Thank-you.
