Tēnā koutou katoa St Michael’s Catholic School Community,
“He waka eke noa.”
A canoe which we are all in with no exception.
We started our week with a lovely liturgy to celebrate and honour St Mary MacKillop as it was her Feast day on Monday 8 August. Well done to our Year 6 Catholic Character leaders – Himaya, Aidan and Sophia for their outstanding confidence and reverence in leading this liturgy.

Ministry of Education – Winter wellness guide for Tamariki
With a rise in Covid-19, seasonal colds, flu and other respiratory infections in our communities, this guidance is to help you manage your child’s illness.
Key wellness indicators:
- Healthy young children can have up to 8 – 12 colds or upper respiratory infections each year as a normal part of childhood.
- A child must stay home if they appear unwell or if they develop any of these symptoms: new runny nose, sore throat, cough, fever, vomiting, diarrhoea, rash, they are off their food and drink or show signs of being miserable.
How to know if your child should stay at home:
- If a child has been unwell with an illness other than Covid-19, they can return to school 24 hours after they have significantly improved and are behaving and eating normally.
Enrolments for 2023
If you have a child who is turning 5 in 2023, now is the time to ensure that they are enrolled with us for next year! Enrolment forms are available on the school’s website. Once they are completed, please either email them to Genevieve at [email protected] or hand a hard copy into the School Office. This is an important part of our planning for 2023, so we appreciate your support in ensuring this occurs in a timely manner. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Catherine at [email protected].

Liturgy of the Word with Children at St Michael’s Parish- Recommencing for Term 3
Children’s Liturgy is recommencing at the 10 am Sunday Mass. It will run again during the school term in the Parish Centre.
Our aim is for primary aged children to receive the Word of God at a level of understanding for their age and to discover its meaning in their lives, whilst giving parents/carers the opportunity to remain in the church and hear the Word of God themselves.
The group re-joins the congregation during the Prayers of the Faithful, ready for the Liturgy of the Eucharist part of the Mass.
Pre-schoolers are welcome with a carer and primary school children can attend independently. (Of course, adults always welcome.)
Anyone wanting more information or wanting to volunteer as a leader please email
Susan– [email protected] or chat to Deahna Barrington.

It has been a challenging time as of late, with some big decisions that needed to be made & conversations that needed to be had.
Sarah and I have decided we will stay on as Co-Chairs until the end of the 2022 year, which will complete a 2 year Term for us both. We are focussed on making sure that the remainder of 2022 is as much fun as possible for everyone within our SMCS Community, and for all of us to work together to future proof the PTA and build up the awesome SMCS Community spirit again!
We realise that many new parents, and those in the Junior School especially, haven’t had the same opportunities to meet each other and enjoy social occasions – or to get to know the PTA and the vital role that we play in conjunction with the Board & Staff within St Michaels. The landscape is changing with respect to the amount of time & energy people have to volunteer for events & projects within the School, so we have some ideas on how to move forward most efficiently. These will be communicated as soon as possible.
On our schedule for the rest of Term 3 & 4 are:
- 23 September – Grandparents Day M/Tea
- 26-30 September – Scholastic Book Week
- Quiz Night
- Movie Night (tbc)
- Individual class get togethers
Watch this space for more information regarding these events.

Thank you to Room 2 Parents for helping with Pizza this week.
Thank you to you all for your continuing support of Pizza Fridays. The children love it, we really appreciate it, and it raises funds for resources for School.
We really rely on parental help to make this a success and to be able to continue to keep this service running for the children. We need 2 volunteers per room and only requires about an hour of your time once a term. Your class parent will let you know when it’s your room’s turn.
Food donations at Thursday class Masses
Towards the end of last term we restarted the non-perishable food donations at the offertory during class Masses. Please feel free to donate non-perishable food at any time to the basket outside Genevieve’s office, but especially if it is your room’s turn for Mass.
All donations are given to Monte Cecilia alongside those donations given by the Parish and given to needy families.
Gardening with the students- Help required please
Jim and Lucy’s Friday afternoon gardening is back on! It has been great being able to get back in the garden these past months with the kids.
Last Term we planted puriri seeds and garlic gloves with Room 7 and Room 10. Each child took ownership of their own seeds with named wooden sticks. They are able to visit their seeds and check on the progress of the new green shoots. We have also been teaching the kids about veggie gardening generally, life cycles of plants and where their food comes from. The kids love it!
We are hoping to work our way around all the senior (and junior) classes by the end of the year. We would love any extra parent help from 1:45 – 3pm on a Friday afternoon. No previous gardening experience required. Please email [email protected] if you are able to help. Thank-you.
Quiz night – Save the date!!
After a fantastic fun evening last year the Quiz night is returning. So get your team organised!
