Tēnā koutou katoa St Michael’s Catholic School Community,
“Ko koe ki tēnā, ko ahau ki tēnei kīwai o te kete”.
You take that handle of the kete and I’ll take this one.
This morning St Michael’s gathered in the Church to celebrate the Feast of the Assumption – the day that Mary was assumed, body and soul, to Heaven. It was lovely to have so many parents join us in this celebration. Thank you to Father Tony for leading the Mass and to Miss Brown for leading the choir.
On Tuesday our school participated in a lockdown and evacuation drill led by a private company, Harrison Tew. The children did a wonderful job at making their way safely to class, and carefully following instructions from their teachers. It was a great opportunity to practise our skills in a calm, controlled manner.
SMCS Talent Extravaganza! Wishing all the Talent Extravaganza finalists the best of luck for their performances tomorrow, starting at 4pm in the hall. All are welcome!
Welcome to New Families and Students
We would like to welcome the following new families who have joined us this term: the O’Sullivan family.
Sadly, due to staff shortages, the Bodrum Kitchen will no longer be offering lunches on Thursdays. Today will be their last for lunch orders for SMCS.
Daffodil Day (Week 4 – Friday 19 August) – yellow mufti day
Our school is proudly supporting the Cancer Society this Daffodil Day! We want to show our support for those affected by cancer by wearing yellow on Friday 19 August. Every dollar we raise this Daffodil Day helps the Cancer Society to support our community. Children are encouraged to make a donation (where possible). Thank you in advance for your support of this very worthy cause.
Congratulations to the Chang Holland family on the safe arrival of Zayden. Zac (Room 7) is a super proud big brother again.
Joint School Parish Mass – Sunday 25 September 10am
We are privileged to be able to finally gather together post-covid and will be having after-Mass socials at the school hall.
One of the school’s Catholic Character goals is to continue to provide opportunities for students and community to nourish spirituality, to develop faith and to rebuild a strong parish school relationship now that the Covid-19 restrictions have eased. This event will be a vital key step towards achieving this goal.
In preparation for this, we are requesting one (1) parent representative from each class to help on the day – first in first served as to which time slot you can help with.
We need volunteers to help:
- Set-up the hall
- Welcome guests
- Serve food and drinks
- Clean-up after
If you are able to help, please contact Venus Itoh ([email protected]) or mobile 027 545 3363.
This is a joint school and parish activity where the parish is kindly organising the food and beverages. We hope we can all work together to make this a success.

Ministry of Education – Winter wellness guide for Tamariki
The Ministry of Education has updated the winter wellness guidance for parents, caregivers and whānau to reflect the following points:
- If a child has been unwell with a respiratory illness other than COVID-19, they can return to school 24 hours after they have significantly improved and are behaving/eating normally.
- Following vomiting or diarrhoea, a child should be symptom free for 48 hours before they can return.
- If they still have a runny nose or dry cough without any other symptoms such as a fever, vomiting or diarrhoea, then they are unlikely to be infectious and can be considered well enough to attend school.
Enrolments for 2023

Liturgy of the Word with Children at St Michael’s Parish- Recommencing for Term 3
Children’s Liturgy is recommencing at the 10 am Sunday Mass. It will run again during the school term in the Parish Centre.
Our aim is for primary aged children to receive the Word of God at a level of understanding for their age and to discover its meaning in their lives, whilst giving parents/carers the opportunity to remain in the church and hear the Word of God themselves.
The group re-joins the congregation during the Prayers of the Faithful, ready for the Liturgy of the Eucharist part of the Mass.
Pre-schoolers are welcome with a carer and primary school children can attend independently. (Of course, adults always welcome.)
Anyone wanting more information or wanting to volunteer as a leader please email
Susan– [email protected]z or chat to Deahna Barrington.

Grammar Juniors Rugby Club – Student Voice
Last Sunday Raph Kirton (Year 6) and Oliver Benson (Year 5) represented Grammar Juniors Rugby Club in an Auckland wide Tournament where their team was pitted against 11 other teams from all around the city.
The team all played really hard throughout the day, managing to push their Semi final game to extra time to progress through to a really exciting final match which also went to ‘golden try’ extra time. Unfortunately they just lost this final game but are looking forward to another tournament in Taupo mid September.
