Queen Elizabeth II, an inspiration to children and adults

The Queen’s dedication to public service has been an inspiration to children and adults alike over the past 70 years. Through her dignity and unswerving sense of duty, the Queen has set an extraordinary example to us all, and she has been a reassuring presence through many turbulent times. The Queen through her grace and dignity touched the lives of millions. We pay tribute to her.

Calendar update

School will be closed on Monday 26 September due to a one-off public holiday for “Queen Elizabeth II Memorial Day”. There will be no Meditation in Week 10.

Health and Safety

Earlier this week, the country retired the use of the COVID Protection Framework.

  • Mask wearing is no longer required when indoors. St Michael’s Catholic School will support those who choose to continue wearing masks.
  • Household contacts of a person with COVID-19 do not need to isolate, but instead are asked to complete a RAT test each day, for five days. Therefore, ākonga who are household contacts but test negative and do not have COVID-19 symptoms, should continue to attend school.

All the other recommended public health measures will stay in place to reduce the spread of infectious illnesses including COVID-19.

These include:

  • ensuring indoor spaces are well-ventilated
  • maintaining good hand hygiene
  • encouraging everyone to cough or sneeze into elbows
  • staying home and getting tested if COVID-19 symptoms show

Rest in Peace Queen Elizabeth II

Gracious God, we give you thanks for the reign of your servant Elizabeth our Queen, and for the example of loving and faithful service which she has shown among us. Help us to follow her example of dedication and to commit our lives to you and to one another, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

God of our lives, we give thanks for the life of Queen Elizabeth, for the love she shared among us, and for her devotion to duty. We entrust her now to your love and mercy, through our Redeemer Jesus Christ.

Merciful God, be close to all who mourn, especially all members of the Royal Family. May they know the hope of your promises and the comfort of your love, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Calendar Art – Orders close this coming Friday!!

This week, you should have again seen the notice on Class Dojo about Calendar Art. All of the students have been working on cool art during the past few weeks, which can be made into fantastic items for sale.

We have diaries, calendars, mouse mats, greeting cards and sketch (plain paper books) all personalised with your child’s art. These make great presents for friends and family (it’s also possible to upload a photo of your choice to be made into any of the above if you would prefer).

Please check out www.kidsartwork.co.nz and log in to our school using the code KZ1052 then navigate to your child’s room where you should find their name and can then order directly from the company. We receive a percentage of each sale, which will be put towards resources at the school. Closing date for orders is this Friday 16th Sept.

In case of any problems, please contact us via [email protected].

Quiz night

Apologies from me, I accidentally missed putting this in last week. The quickest sell out in recent history for the 2022 SMCS PTA Parents Quiz Night.

Whilst the focus on this event was bringing the community together, we still managed to raise almost $1,000. We had parents from every class in the school attend and the relaxed format of the evening allowed for plenty of socialising. Auckland Bowling Club is a fabulous venue and thanks once again for supporting the school so generously. Thanks to the A-team of Audrey, Analiese and Alex.

With food being so expensive we were extremely grateful to Stephanie van Oijen for using her family contacts and getting us lots of the delicious platter food at cost.

Please support these small businesses Marsic Fish Shop in Glen Innes (09 5289556) and Baguette and Co. in the city www.baguetteandco.co.nz. We are also very grateful to Rachel Wichman from Simplify my home for the kind donation of a raffle prize.

Jane from Quinn’s Quizzes was an amazing host and had her work cut out for her keeping close to 100 people quiet long enough to read the questions, but no trouble keeping them challenged and entertained.

Congratulations to the B-Team for taking out the win just ahead of the Bald Eagles.

A massive thank you to Emma Houghton and Deahna Barrington for organising this event once again and getting the school community together for such a fabulous night out.

Pizza Fridays

Thank you to Room 7 Parents for their help with pizzas this week. Your support is really appreciated.

Food donations at Thursday class Masses

Please feel free to donate non-perishable food at any time to the basket outside Genevieve’s office, but especially if it is your room’s turn for Mass as the items in the basket are taken up at the offertory by the children before being sent to Monte Cecilia alongside donations given by the Parish and are then distributed to needy families.

Grandparents day – Friday 23 Sept 2022

We’re getting closer to our annual Grandparents day. Please make sure you’ve informed your grandparents. This is always a really popular day for Grandparents and kids alike.

Order of events for the day:

  • Mass 9am – 10am
  • Classroom visits 10 – 10.30am
  • Morning tea in the hall provided by the PTA 10.30 – 11.15 (for grandparents only)
  • Concert 11.30 – 12.30

The PTA will be arranging a special morning tea (for Grandparents only) in the hall. We need volunteers to help on the day from 9am – 12.30. Please contact [email protected] if you are able to assist.

We also ask the community to contribute to the morning tea by providing a plate of homemade sweet baking. (The PTA will provide savoury items). Please note that baking should be bite sized finger food.

Please click on the link here to let us know what item you are planning to contribute, to try and avoid too many duplications. Baking should be delivered to the school hall on the morning of 23rd September.  Thank you.

Scholastic Book Fair Tues – Friday 23rd– 30th Sept

It’s great to be able to celebrate book week again this year!!! 27th – 30th September!!
During this time we have the Scholastic book fair running in the break-out rooms above the hall.
It will be running from Friday the 23rd (Grandparents Day) till Friday the 30th September and to make it work we need two volunteers each morning and afternoon for approximately half an hour.
If you are able to help please email Monique on [email protected]. Many thanks.

2022 Yummy sticker collection coming to an end week 9 Friday 23rd September

Please bring in your labels or sheets and place them in the PTA box outside the PTA cupboard by Mrs McKeown’s office. Don’t worry if the sheet is not completely full, just write in a big number how many there are.

Let’s hope we can beat last year’s total and get over $700 worth of sports equipment.

Second hand School Uniform shop – donations welcome

The end of term is approaching fast and that means it’s nearly time to change to the summer uniform.
If you have any uniform items to donate, (Summer or winter) we would be very grateful for them. We are especially running low on bigger sizes for older pupils. Please drop any donations into Genevieve at the office. Thank you
