Guided inquiry is a cyclical learning process by which children are supported to develop deep understandings about broad Concepts. A concept-driven curriculum helps learners to make connections throughout the year, across traditional subjects and into their world beyond school.
Teachers use Big Ideas (ideas that are meaningful to children, authentic and worthwhile) to drive learning and provide contexts for understanding a Concept. Currently at St Michael’s Catholic School, science, social science, technology and health are explored in this way. As much as possible, teachers also integrate inquiry learning with religious education, reading, writing, maths and the arts.
One of the tools teachers and students use for thinking throughout the inquiry process is SOLO Maps. These are a series of graphic organisers which help with the organisation of information and ideas and provide a framework for developing thinking skills. Below are blank templates and the corresponding rubrics which describe the levels of thinking the student may achieve when using the maps.
