Tumuaki/Principal News
Dear Families,
Mothers are like the hull of a canoe, they are the HEART of the family.
It has certainly been an action-packed week since our last newsletter! There is quite a lot to cover this week - please have a good read below for information regarding St John Therapy Pets in Schools, a reminder about the use of personal devices at school, and an update on the current status of measles in Auckland.
Our Year 6 students spent three days at Camp Adair in the Hunua Ranges last week. This trip was rescheduled from the start of the year, when Cyclone Gabrielle caused its cancellation, and we are absolutely thrilled that it was able to go ahead this term. It has been so heart-warming to hear the kid’s stories this week - the fears they managed to overcome, and the personal challenges that they encountered and persevered through. We are proud of each and every one of you, and we know that these precious memories are ones that will stay with you.
A huge “thank you” to Mrs Capon and Mrs Spora, and to their fabulous group of parent helpers who kept the kids spirits up despite some pretty horrendous weather: Steve Benson, Julia Black, Monique Booth, Ashby Cordtz, Anthony Cheng, Dave Gollop, Alex Houghton, Katie Joynes, Karina Kumarga, Paul Lemmens, Marty Templeton and Jon Williams.

Along with their stacks of laundry, the Year 6’s managed to bring the challenging weather back to school with them! It was lovely to see our school community pull together on Tuesday, when the torrential rain caused Auckland to be placed under a State of Emergency. Again. Thank you to those parents who collected children from multiple families in an attempt to get everyone home safely - and to Mrs Cordtz, who managed to collect seven of our staff member’s children from Baradene after their buses were cancelled! These small acts of kindness make such a big difference during tricky times.
Finally, we wanted to take an opportunity to wish all of our lovely St Michael’s Mums a very happy Mother’s Day this weekend. For those within our community who have lost their Mum, you are very much in our thoughts at this time too.
